Two weeks in Upstate NY
Trip is on for Sept. 16-30. We plan to spend time in Saratoga Springs, Lake Placid and the Finger Lakes. If anyone has experience in these areas, please chime in.
Thanks to Hutch, my route from Richmond to Saratoga is set. We plan to be overnighting at Frances Slocum SP outside Wilkes-Barre. Anyone been there? Better idea?
Accommodations for Saratoga will be at Cedarbrook Resort in nearby Gansevoort.
North Pole Resorts looks good for the Lake Placid/Saranac area.
I'm undecided about the Finger Lakes, whether to stay near Geneva or go more south to Watkins Glenn - Ithaca area. Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Teach

Saratoga, Horse Racing Museum and the Auto museum (in the old spring water bottling plant). Both great even if you aren't a horse/car buff. The auto museum has a wonderful selection of rare cars as many were made in small NY factories that only ran for a few yrs. Saratoga Performing Arts and the whole park around it are great. Finger Lakes, I would definitely go south and stay at a park on one of the lakes. We found Watkins Glen State Park to have difficult access to sites. But the actual Glen is wonderful and you can walk part of it or the whole thing if you are a hiker. We love the small and bare bones town park (Clute) at the end of Seneca Lake. It has Wifi, all hook-ups and decent sites and you can stroll to the really nice town park across the lake on the southern end of the lake. Some members here love Sampson State Park and Keuka Lake State Park. We have yet to try those out although we visited the Air Force Museum at Sampson and it was really great. Nice people ! We've recently been to Letchworth SP with its wonderful waterfalls and would highly recommend it. 17 mile long SP and 3 gorgeous waterfalls that are easy to walk to (each has a nice pull-off). One of them is near the lovely Inn (Glen Iris Inn) that is part of the part. Decently priced meals for a really upscale kind of setting.

I would also recommend Letchworth. I camped there with my 77 17.5SB a couple years ago in mid September as my niece was married there. Nice sites. Everyone loves that park and it is great. Saratoga is nice but I have never camped there. Old Forge is beautiful if you like the adirondaks. Have fun!

Teach....Frances Slocum is my "home park"....if you have any special needs in a campsite please pm me as I am very familiar with the park....it's a great park on a beautiful lake but if it is a quick stopover you need, it is not very close to rt. 81...there are not any actual parks near 81 in this area, but a couple of large 24 hr Walmarts are very close and very safe. If you decide on Wally World let me know if you would like to say hello! The one in WB can almost be seen from the highway.. all kinds of good places to eat right there!! We used to stay there when we were leaving for Fl after a tiring day, pull in and enjoy the great Chinese buffet there, relax and then get an early start with all the last minute stuff behind us! Hope this helps! Janalee

Teach,
We stayed for a week at Keuka Lake SP in the Finger Lakes area and it was very nice! Right in the middle of wine country and close to Watkins Glen. There are three loops in the CG, two with electric and one dry camping. We reserved in the Twin Fawns loop (electric) but moved to the Esperanza loop (also electric) after one night b/c we liked it better. One neat thing is that they have shelter belts around almost every site which makes the individual sites nice and private. The CG is not on the lake but you can easily walk/drive to it. Sounds like a nice Fall camping trip you'll be taking!

I've been a bit leery of using a SP. This isn't a "camping" trip. We use our TT for "touring." (Hey, is that a new category to add to "boondocking" and "glamping"?) On these kinds of trips, we tend toward full hookups or W/E sites. Having said that, however, we have been known to give up the water and sewer for an exceptionally nice park; one that is clean, naturally beautiful and void of amenities that make it attractive to party animals. Our main criterion is a park convenient to interesting places to visit.
I saw Clute. Boy, are they proud of that park at $55 a night. But this is our vacation and if you think Clute would be a good basecamp from which to explore the area, I'll reconsider.

There is a KOA in Watkins Glen as well. We went to tour it. Expensive ($80+per night), but has all the frills. If you want a decent place for basecamp, I think Clute would be fine and it is a bargain. Easy to tour up and down the various lakes and see the wineries, etc. from there. Do note that all of the Watkins Glen parks fill up due to the big racetrack. Some are booked way in advance if it is a big race week. Some of the state parks do have electric. We absolutely loved Letchworth. Do check it out online.

Teach,
In the Finger Lakes area, there's Sampson SP. It's a nice SP, but only electric hook-ups. It has a nice Navy / Air Force museum in the SP. It used to be an old Naval Base (used for training on Seneca Lake) and then an Air Force base after that. You can still see some of the remnants from when it was a military base.
I would not recommend staying at Watkins Glen SP. I've never been there but haven't heard any good things about it's camping facilities.
If you're looking for more full hook-ups, I would recommend Watkins Glen KOA. It's a very nice campground, but $$.
It's just south of Watkins Glen and easy access to Ithaca, Corning and other southern Finger Lakes area.
A lot of great wineries on both sides of Seneca Lake as well as the other Finger Lakes, if wine tasking is in your plans while there.
Ithaca has a neat Farmers Market that's worth checking out and a lot of falls in the Ithaca area too. Some of the falls are in SP and in NY when you pay an entrance fee to a SP, it gives you entrance to all other SP you might visit on the same day.
Hope this is of some help.
Have a fun and safe trip.
Hutch

Okey-dokey the itinerary is set, reservations made. Visiting relatives in Saratoga Springs, staying at Coldbrook Resort CG about 5 min. from their home in Wilton. Then off to North Pole Resorts to tour Seneca/Lake Placid area. I took Mellow's advice and booked our stay for the Finger Lakes in downtown Watkins Glen at Clute.
Thanks to Jannlee's help we may have resolved our overnight in the Wilkes-Barre area.
I figured knowing a bunch of Yankees would come I handy someday.
Thanks for the help - I may be back

Teach,
While you are in the Watkins Glen area, look up Corning Museum of Glass Corning Museum of Glass
It is about 30 minutes according to Bing maps. We went one year with another SOC couple as a place to see while camping near by and I was shocked and intrigued. Never new fiber optics manufacturing started there a long time ago. You can really spend almost all day there. I have never seen so much glass, ever... We were all glad we went after going. I had no idea what to expect. Make sure you have good walking shoes on. You can spend a lot of time, sort of window shopping looking at all the exhibits.
Have a safe trip

Bumping the thread.
Thanks for all the things-to-do suggestions and camping tips.
Nick's Lake and the M&G are now on the itinerary. Thanks to Janalee, we're having a mini-M&G at Mohegan Sun Pocono casino's parking lot (for our overnight spot Wednesday).
I'm going to the trailer today to cut on the fridge, air the tires and put the dual batteries on the tongue. Tomorrow we load food, clothes and adult refreshments. Wednesday we hook up and head out. Penny decided two weeks away from our kitties was too much, so they're coming, too.
Look out for a grey Tundra (with an SOC bumper sticker) pulling a Rockwood Ultra Light.

If you are going to be in the Finger Lakes area you should stop at the Glen Curtis museum in Hammondsport. He was a brilliant inventor. He mostly is known for his airplanes and motorcycles but he also made a travel trailer!
Looking forward to meeting you and others at the M&G at Nicks lake.
