Texas Panhandle - Caprock Canyons SP

After spending another weekend in Caprock Canyons State Park near Quitaque, TX (pronounced "kitty quay"), I have to share this with you.

Caprock Canyons SP is home to the Texas state bison herd. This is the second year the campgrounds have been open to them, roaming freely as they see fit. It is a sight to behold, particularly when they roam in near proximity. Rules are you do not approach them or feed them. It can sometimes be hard to remember that they are wild animals - and will act accordingly if they see fit.

Besides the bison herd, Caprock Canyons will keep you busy fishing in Lake Theo, hiking the beautiful canyon country, bike riding, photography, bird watching, or just kicking back by the campfire. There is a playground for the kids. On a clear and moonless night, you will have trouble keeping your jaw parked in the "up" position, as it offers a view of the night sky you will never forget. This is certified to be the second darkest area in Texas, and rightly so. You will never see as many stars (or the Milky Way) as you will here.

The spaces are very reasonable. Their 30 amp and water service is $15.00 per night. There are 50 amp spaces as well, but most are 30. Centrally located showers/restrooms are well kept and convenient.

You won't be disappointed. When visiting the panhandle, don't overlook this one.
