Construction is nearly identical to my 85, except I see they stopped using those stupid pull knobs that actuate a latch.

You might teach me something new here. So the knobs on yours actually pull out to release the latch? I figured they were just a knob version and they still used the u-shaped clip and plastic piece.

That's how the low doors work, like the ones under the Gaucho and under the sink/stove but the "overhead" doors (2 over the kitchen, 2 over the Gaucho, 2 over the dinette) are all this silly pull knob that breaks.
Inside there is a small bolt (as in door bolt, not bolt/screw) that has the stem of the handle passing though it from the outside. As you pull the handle, a cam causes the bolt to slide upward. When the bolt is high enough it clears the catch on the door frame and the door opens.

Had them on my '76 Prowler and my '65 Avalon, too. Genuine PITA.
