1979 Sunspot near Albany NY - $1500

This factory built trailer is one of the smallest ever made, and was designed to be pulled behind compact cars. From the factory, it weighed 655 pounds. I believe only a handful were made between 1978 and 1983. It's 5ft. wide by about 10ft long, including the tongue. It's 54 inches tall inside, which means that short people can stand up inside.

The unit is in camp-ready condition as is. We built a ¾” plywood raised bed that fills the interior space, and made cushions out of 3” high density foam. It is incredibly comfortable to sleep in (better than my regular bed). It has three new radial trailer tires, 2 with less than 1000 miles on them, and the spare with no miles on it. All the bearings and seals in the wheel hubs are new in 2011. It has been completely re-wired for legal running lights and has a standard 4 prong flat connector and all new running lights. It has a side door (rebuilt due to substantial dry rot), a rear compartment hatch, two rear doors and three functioning louver windows, as well as a sliding frosted glass/screen window in the door. It has two 5,000# scissor jacks on the back for leveling, and the factory wrench thing for the jacks.

There were no keys when we bought it. We replaced both the main door and back hatch doors with regular entry door locks, both keyed the same. We also installed a new rear lower hatch lock.

In place of the original galley, water tank, stove and fridge it has a single flat shelf. It doesn't have the Sunspot's original interior, although the cushions we made for it are designed to be used for a dinette arrangement. An owner prior to us gutted the interior and refitted it with birch plywood walls, and put in a single flat shelf in the back. The 12v system (a front and rear compartment light) is functional, but needs a deep cycle battery. It does have original Sunline hubcaps.

I'm south of Albany, NY. The trailer is kept in my pole barn. I can deliver or drive it to anyone within a reasonable distance. It is currently registered as a home-built trailer, licensed and has NYS inspection for 2012. I also have the original serial number if anyone wants to try to register it as an original Sunline.

Things that I have that can go for free with this trailer are a 60 amp load center with a 15 amp breaker and a 25’ 15 amp cable for regular house or campground power (plus the outlet from the trailer for the cable), a 12V car battery (not deep cycle, but a good battery with a full charge), and a length of 7 wire cable that I planned on using with a 7 prong connector to wire the trailer as it was originally.

Later tonight I will post a link to my Photobucket page that tracks the amount of work and $ that went into this little jewel. We love it, but need to sell it to finance improvements to our T-1550. Any questions, pm me and I'll give you contact info that way. I have LOTS of pics. Thanks!

Frank

I'm not allowed to forward any more Sunspots for sale to Marshall...sigh.
It looks like a nice one.

It's a great little trailer now, not so much when we bought it, but I'm a handy fellow and Gail is a seamstress from way back, though she spends her days mostly now as a computer programmer analyst!

Thanks!

Frank, there was a guy on the Youngstown, OH Craigslist looking for one. He had a Sunspot a long time ago and wants one again.

Hmmm. Wonder how I might locate this fellow Jon, or if maybe somebody could point him to me? Or should I put an ad on the craigslist in Youngstown?

HERE IS THE CRAIGSLIST AD FOR YOUNGSTOWN OH

Sunline Sunspot Camper (Ohio/PA)

Date: 2012-06-10, 9:38PM EDT
Reply to: 6kms3-3069959496@sale.craigslist.org [Errors when replying to ads?]

I am looking for a Sunline Sunspot camper. They were made late 1970's through early 80's. I had one that was 10.5 ft. long, slept two, and had a chuckwagon kitchen at the rear. Interested in buying one again, as they were towable by a small 4 cylinder car. If anyone has one or knows of one that would be for sale, please e-mail me.

Thanks!

Good, hopefully that works. When I saw that, I sent it to Marshall, who wasn't interested in selling though. I was on my phone earlier, so I looked it up and found the link, only to find that it had been removed by the author. So either he gave up or did find one somehow.

No Jon, this fellow wants an original Sunspot. Tells me he has had two over the years and let them both go. Not many of these babies made, so I wish him luck. It's always amazing to me the old tiny travel trailers I see sitting out and going to the dogs. This one wasn't too far from that when I got it!

See if you can access this link: Sunline Sunspot pictures by 4doordart - Photobucket

It's a pictorial story of what I did to save this Sunline. I think it's backwards - new stuff 1st, but take a look and see if you can get into it.

Thanks!

Frank

Oh, so he wants one with the original kitchen setup then? As both you and Marshall have found, it seems that these Sunspots were common things to modify for some reason. It sounds like he's looking for a 'barn find' that has been stored in original condition. Between the funky paint jobs, kitchen tearouts, missing cushions/tables/awnings, it's hard to find them complete. Even though the Teardrops and Tiny Trailers group out there like these too, I'm not too much of a fan since most like to go with the really weird paint jobs and mods that are hard/impossible to put back to the factory look.

That's right John, he wants one with the original frig, stove and sink set-up. If it was me, and that's what I wanted, I'd just do it, but that's just me. Not everybody is handy.

This one would not be hard to put back to original, though the way we designed the cushions was to have one seat against the front and the other against the back with the table/middle bed support in the middle. That is not how Sunspots were originally, but how we wanted it. We didn't retrofit the kitchen because we are real well supplied for camping kitchen stuff. We have a number of propane appliances, the largest camp kitchen Cabela's sells, a couple kitchen tents (10X10 and 12X12) with one fully screened, roll-up aluminum tables, etc. If it hadn't been for this T-1550 coming up, we'd be camping in Spot again this summer.

Two tire kickers so far. One of them accused me of hiding mold odors by keeping the windows open before he came to see it. Gee, I keep camper windows open whenever I can! Oh well, onward. We're going out in our classic boat and enjoy a cruise on the Hudson!
