I am not sure when the older VIN format was replaced with the current 17 digit system.
On many of the Sunlines, under the door bottom threshold plate they would put a tag with the camper VIN number on it in case the other one was lost or wore off. I do not know what year they started doing this, it may or may not be in a 1977 Sunline but you can check it. Just take out the screws holding the entry door threshold plate off (at the bottom of the door way) and have a look.
From the newer Sunlines, meaning at least into the 80's, the VIN number was the serial number. There was not 2 seperate numbers.
We have a member Sunline Fan who is our guru of the older campers. He may be able to help more.
Hope this helps
John
