New Truck Camper Owners - Northeast PA

Hello everyone! My girlfriend and I are proud new owners of a Sunline truck camper. This camper is in rough condition and has sat unused in the weather for 20 years. We are eager to do a complete restoration, but on a budget. We have read thru some of the posts and are hoping to use this forum to help, as this is our first camper restoration.

We found the "truck loading document" in the closet which states that the camper is an 11FKS. It also had a document date of October 1973. Would anyone be able to confirm both the date and model of this camper?

We love the nostalgia of this camper and want to restore it to its similar 70's fashion to keep the Sunline camper look as it was over 40 years ago.

Thanks in Advance!

Jay & Jenette

Welcome Jay and Jennette!

Congrats on your new Sunny!

The way these campers are made, they are totally rebuildable. We look forward to your restoration project. Please consider posting pics of the progress and start a new post on it. We can help as we can. While the number of truck camper members are fewer, the construction and repair techniques are similar to the travel trailers and fifth wheels Sunline made. We have lot on travel trailer repairs.

To help on the model number, we have a 1973 Sunline truck camper brochure in our files section. You can download a copy. There is a lot of good info in there. It appears back then, they had 3 floor plans. You can see in the brochure the floor plan and line it up with yours to confirm the model. I'm also not sure the models changed every year back then like they did in later years.

To get to the files section, look along the top of the forum for the words FILES, that is a hotkey tab. Click it. Then go to brochures, and scroll to 1973 and download a copy.

Now to the year, not sure what the document you found is. Going that far back, the model year may have followed a different date change then the manufacturing date. On the newer ones, the manufacture date for a model year may start mid year, the year before and run until the following mid year. For exp, a 2002 model Sunline may have been made in August 2001.

On newer campers, we can tell the year often by the 17 digit VIN number. But your camper appears to be older than the current 17 digit federal system. We have a Sunline historian guru member "Sunline Fan" who might be able to help on the real oldies and yours is in that group.

Looks like a fun project. They can be and when you finally make it out camping, relaxing around a crackling campfire enjoying yourself, you can sit back and look at it and think, how did I do all that??? And it came out good!

Hope this helps

John

What forum group do you recommend starting the full restoration post in?

In your specific case having a truck camper and doing a restoration on it, you can add a thread in the Truck Camper forum or the Repair and Maintenance forum.

While both are appropriate, the Truck Camper forum would be better in this restoration instance since we have limited truck camper threads. It would be easier for someone in the future to find your camper rebuild there, as this would be a likely place to start looking for info.

That said, if you are working on the furnace, range, fridge or other appliances, that repair fits the Repairs and Maintenance forum better as travel trailers, fifth wheels, truck campers etc. can all use the same exact appliance.

As FYI if you have not seen it, here is Lode's truck camper project. He was off to a great start. Don't know if something came up preventing him from completing it.

Looking forward to your project.

Welcome Jay & Jenette! What an awesome camper!! Thanks so much for sharing it with us. Most in that condition would have met a sad ending, so I'm glad you're going to fix it up.

Your camper is a 1976 or 1977 and the model is an 11' FKS, as you said. She's a big one at 18' long overall! It's not any older or newer than that, due to the AWESOME large plastic Sunline logo on the back. There should be an ID tag somewhere on the camper with a serial number. If you can find that and send it to me, I can confirm the year. It might be a small metal tag, but it could have also been a square decal about the size of a post-it note. I've seen them on the inside of the entry door jam too. Inside one of cabinets, usually the largest one but not necessarily, there might be a quality control certification sheet glued to the wall like the the loading instructions. The loading instruction sheet may also have the serial number on it. They changed them over the years, so I'm not sure what style you have.
