A '99 T-1950 Solaris is almost double the weight of a T-1661. The walls are twice as thick, there's an extra axle, and the construction is just much heavier duty. A Dodge Journey is only rated to pull around 2500 lbs, which the T-1661 is about that dry. You need a vehicle capable of towing at least 5000 lbs for a T-1950.

I would agree. Depending on what your car is rated to tow, and allowing for trailer, and whatever you bring along with you. The 1661 is rated for a little more than 1900 lbs dry. I am not sure of this, but I think that you have to figure passenger weight in the vehicle also when figuring towibg capacity. The journey pulled mine o.k., it seemed. But then again, we weren't towing up and down hilly roads either. Really hate to burn a motor or transmission up. The Journey is a v-6 3.5 litre.

The GVW is part of the equation people, tong, weight, gear and that case of beer. It is a light weight as far as towing I don't know if the tow package is a factory item or not I guessing it has a 1 1/2 draw bar that would be a dead give away that it's meant for light weight towing. With out a transmission aux cooler you run a real good risk of damaging the transmission by overheating it. The other problem would be the tail wagging the dog with a front drive vehicle.

And the fact the Journey has 165k miles on it. Time for truck shopping soon. Once towed 2 Harleys in an enclosed trailer to and from Florida from Michigan and that had to be 2000 lbs pius. The Journey did o.k., even through the hills of Kentucky and Tennessee.

OBOY! Give me the old days! In 1998 I towed a 21' Sunny out West, thru the Rockies and to 12 Nat'l parks, with a Ford Crown Vic and only heated up when I used the AC ! Then in 2001 I did it again, a 22' Sunny towed with my '96 Chevy van! Yay--I could use the AC!! I did tow a 2001 28' Wildwood with a slide for Fl trips with an '01 Chev van that finally gave it up here on a mountain ,towing my 2363--but that was my fault--overloaded the van not the trailer.
Now my point is this...I think too much emphasis is being put on this trailer vs. truck tow ratings..either these vehicles are being made really "weakly" or you guys are just wanting to change trucks!! My 3 full size conversion vans were the best and most comfortable vehicles for towing I ever owned. I plan to tow my 1661 this summer here in PA,to my local parks, with my '07 Nissan Murano rated at 3500 lbs.tow rating, probably with wt dist. equipment and some common sense..
Anyone out there who is towing with less than "BIG DOG"" vehicles, please chime in!

I do, I tow with a 4500# Tacoma but I will not tow any thing that weights more than the truck and more that likely nothing that comes with in 1000#. It is a 6 speed manual trans with a 230+ HP engine and with about 3,000# of T1700 I'm down to 3rd gear topping Crawford notch it's rated 6500#. I have a Dodge dully I feel comfortable with that up to 12,000# and more if I tow with the 5th wheel. It has 4 tires on the back end and will not get pushed around by the trailer. Another thing people need to understand is that front wheel drive vehicles are very light in the back end. You are probably OK with a 3500# rating and a 1661 trailer A WD hitch only helps with tong weight shifting some of it back to the trailer.
