hello, I recently purchased a 1550. I have a few questions. Can I add an AC window unit? If so, where is the best place to put it? Secondly, need to get an awning, is there any sites that sell these? Thanks

I have noticed a lot of new Coleman campers have window mount AC units built in the side of the camper I had thought of doing that with mine (briefly) and having the inside part extend into the over head cabinets and just opening the door when I wanted to use the AC. Many people have done installs with window mounts some good most pretty shoddy.

Welcome! We are only a few years into a 1550 and love every trip with it. The AC question was one I agonized over for a while. The 1550 has a place for a roof top unit...but I am not real fond of them because no matter how much you try they will leak eventually. So I decided to experiment. I have a portable AC unit that you duct out side. Think it is about 7500 btu. anyway, the small window in the rear upper side is the perfect size to put a dryer outlet into and still close the window when not in use, screen stays intact. No big clunky AC unit ganging out. The portable unit plugs in to the ac plug 110 v existing near the fuse panel. This unit will make the trailer into a freezer in no time. Works well for the two of us as we made over the dining table area into a full bed, using the rear bed area for other purposes. We find that most of the time the unit sits out of the way in the corner, when needed I just roll it forward, connect the hose and its chill-in time! Have fun with your 1550, I know we do!

I have one of the portable ones and there is no way I wouldn't block some thing with it inside my T1700 unless I put it in the shower! Roof top ac are OK they are designed for them the gaskets are good for about 5 years and it's not much of a job to change them or install an ac for that matter every thing is in place all ready. I don't have one and in it's place I installed a Fantastic fan it is reversible and moves a LOT of air.

Hi, I never said it was for everyone. It works for us, fits in the corner and as many times we needed it in Maine.... ( love Maine ) it is great. As I sealed my roof with Latex, i see no good reason to disturb it with an AC unit. If I were to go south....sigh........blizzard on the way here tomorrow.......I would reconsider my position.

We put a small $98 one in the back window. Looks like crap, leaks air in winter, but sure is nice in the heat!

We took the window out & used angled aluminum to brace it up & the accordion that came w/ it to finish out the window space, & painted the framing aluminum. No it's not made to take in & out.
Our's came with a pretty new awning, but we had to re-do all the attachments, going all the way thru the wall adding some metal and bolting together.

Hello and welcome,
I purchased my awning when I needed a new one from someone on eBay, it was brand new and shipped folded instead of rolled so it came UPS. Ours is a 21' trailer so I think our awning was a 14'.
As for the AC, our came with a rooftop when we bought it, we finally had to replace it with a new one last year as the controls were so old we had trouble finding parts for it, our trailer is an 83, do not know when the AC was put it, it may have been when the trailer was new.

When we had our "A Happy Place II" a T-1750 we had the same dilemma with the A/C. I didn't want to make any drastic changes to the camper's structure so I came up with a cantilever shelf design the I could easily slide in and out of the emergency window.

I started with a sheet of 1/2" plywood cut to fit over the inside frame of the window, into which I installed a small room size air conditioner from Walmart on a reverse, cantilever:

I then upholstered the board to match the seat cushions Kathy made:

The idea here is that once we parked, we could open the window, set the A/C unit in the window from the inside and the weight of the unit would hold it in place.

Within minutes of turning it on, it was nice and cool inside. The water produced dripped outside the camper.

When it was time to head home, I would simply pull the unit back inside the rig and close the window. I thought this to be a nice alternative to cutting a hole in the wall.

This looks like it worked well, In our camper it would be right over the bed, I afraid ir would cause too much draft, but looks good in your model.
