new family to camping

Just checking in after many months of searching and gathering info. We just picked up a 1989 T1740 than needs a little fixing up. Its really clean and everything works, the only problem is 2 water leaks due to the roof seams. Its going in the shop after I check out the water system today to get started. We cant wait to get it finished and take the kids camping with friends next summer. Great site here, lots of very helpful info.

Hi sled head - Welcome to the forum! Are you doing the repair work or having someone do it? If you are and run into any problems....post here....we have a great forum and are members are very knowledgeable and willing to help!!!! If you are doing the work - take pictures and post them.....it is a way we all learn!

Sled Head - does that indicate you are a snowmobiler???? Where do you ride???? Leo and I live in Old Forge (NY) - we snowmobiled for years - now we are just too old to go out and enjoy it!!! LOL - so we just stick to camping!

Thanks. doing the work myself. I havent restored a camper yet, so here it goes. Yes I snowmobile. We have a small remote camp in the NEK of Vermont. I used to go a lot but a family changes things (for the better)

Know that feeling well - we now live in our "snowmobile home" and our kids and their kids come and spend every weekend with us....family has changed the way "they" ride!!!!

Doesn't that have an aluminum roof?

Yes it does. Got it in the barn yesterday and just started cutting the ceiling and wall open in 1 area. So far just wet along the outer edge above the door and down the wall, no structral rot found yet. keeping my fingers crossed.

awww your camper looks almost identical to ours . we have a 1985 T-2100. and love it but we sure do need a new door for our camper ! and having no luck finding one .. enjoy your camper ..

Welcome, Jim! We've had an '88 T-1350 for a couple years and are going to take 'er out to our local canyon this weekend.

She was our introduction to travel trailer camping, too. Gotta get out while the weather cooperates.

When you say "roof seams", do you mean seams where sheet metal is joined or where vents and such mount on the roof? Our aluminum roof doesn't have any seams - except maybe at the front and back where the roof meets the walls. Are those the ones you speak of?

You'll love your "new" Sunline, and you have certainly come to the right place!

The roof is wider than the trailer so what they do is roll the outside edge over the sides over top of the siding an inch or two so there is no seam then put the aluminum rail over top if it to hold it down so there really is no flat seam. My T1700 was covered with roof tar all along the edge so I took every thing apart to see why they did that. The bottom line I still don't know why because it really can't leak there. I did manage to get the tar off and while I was up there every thing got resealed or replaced. I had water damage inside the rear compartment and it was from the black tank roof vent. There seems to be some thing structural with the siding near the door that seems to be a place where the siding cracks I wonder if that is where you water got in by the door?

Hey sled head have you had the springs done under the Tacoma TSB? Yours seems to sit low in the back maybe it's the cap and gear. I tow a T1700 that pretty much the same as yours with a different floor plan with a Tacoma AC but it has the 4 leaf spring pack replaced under the TSB for "harsh ride" If it has the 3 leaf springs tell them it bottoms out with all most any load. You may have got a recall notice about the springs and if you go in for the recall pester them about a "harsh ride" it really does not ride any different but is does sit up about an 1 1/2" higher and will carry weight better.

Thanks everyone. Mainah, the Tacoma is a 2012 no tsb done. I had the tsb done on the 06 I had. What year is your taco? I found my source of leak # 1. I found 3 small pinholes in the roof. weird huh? Leak # 2 (found by putting m foot through the floor) I hae not pin pointed yet.I will post in repairs and maint section.

Mine is a 2011 I had them do the springs at about 2,000 miles I use the truck here on my 80 acres hauling a lot of fire wood etc. I bought the truck knowing I was going to haul some sort of camper trailer and that was another reason I made them do the 4 leaf spring swap. Try this one they seem to update it but this is a start. T-SB-0305-08. There is a recall on the rear springs in general so if you get to that point hit them with the TSB and hopefully you get a 4 leaf pack out of them. Strangely the Canadian trucks all came with 4 leaf packs I guess the Americans wanted a softer ride instead of being able to carry stuff. Good luck on the leaks they are part of the "fun" with any camper.

Thanks, Ill check it today. The dealer knows me well. I have a slight driveline vibration in 2nd gear (auto trans) between 2000 and 2300 rpm. After an update, big shots from Toyota said its normal. I had them give me a 100K powertrain warranty. How does yours tow on the highway at 65? I was impressed towing the camper home across some hilly roads at around 50ish
