1982 16 1/2' FD Sunline Owner Goes down Rabbit Hole
Howdy folks!
I recently, just today, bought a 1982 16 1/2' FD Sunline! I'm really excited as I have been sleeping in tents for my entire life and as I get older, the thought of sleeping in a bed while enjoying the great outdoors is music to my ears. I threw down $500 for this bad boy and am anxious to do the minor repairs necessary to make this TT road worthy.
My name is Josh and I live in the Northern Panhandle of West Virginia. I am a trout fishing enthusiast and am a proud Eagle Scout. I'm sure that I will be posting often looking for sage advice from the experts in this forum.

That's one nice camper for $500! Hope it's in as good a shape as it looks.

There are a few minor things. For instance, I have to hook up a water pump, investigate the electric brakes, and put a new awning on it at some point. It looks like the roof vent may have leaked in the bathroom area, but the floor seems firm and with it being a leak over the shower, I think that it couldn't have happened in a better place. As I go down this rabbit hole I'm sure that this $500 camper will turn into a $2000 camper, but if I'm able to do most of the work by myself and ensure at the end of the investment I have a nice camper I think it'll be well worth it. I hope to document my journey and keep people updated.

Josh, I have an 89 16'. LOVE this camper. Bought it in nice shape for $2300 ten years ago. It has been reliable beyond any expectation. I am sure you will love yours. Enjoy.
Jim

Welcome to the Forum, and great score at that price.
We paid $1800 for our 1983 T1661 (16.5') and it needs some work also.
You got a bargain.

Let us know what you encounter with the electric brakes. Mine does not have any, and some other similar campers seem to have them. I don't know if a previous owner removed mine, or if it was never equipped with them in the first place. It tows very well behind my F150 and I barely notice it's there.

I will likely be replacing them out with new ones. I know that a previous owner had some sort of problem so they just cut the wire going to them. I guess first I'll try to rehook them and just test them out to see what the problem is, but I will certainly make sure to document the process for anyone else about to have to deal with it.

They are super simple drum brakes. You should be able to locate replacements with no trouble. There a number previous threads about brakes, bearings, and axles going back over the life of the forum. Plenty of detail info already here.

Most likely if the brakes are there it's wiring related granted there can be issues with the electrical parts inside but if the wiring shows any signs of being tampered with it is highly suspect. I have seen some creative wiring one if my favorites is connecting the brake wiring to the turn signal wire and having the brakes lock up every time the lights flashed. You camper should have a break away switch if not it needs one, properly wired you should be able to pull the pin and lock the brakes up good quick test of the brakes.
