Heater / blower issue

Went out for our first trip of the season last weekend and needed the furnace as we were in the 40s at night. The heater seemed to be working okay, was blowing nice hot air, but I felt that the air was not moving with as much force as normal. The vent in the front bedroom had very little coming out of it and its the larger style floor vent, not the small round one. I can't imagine something was blocking it as it goes under the floor but I just don't know where to begin. I'm wondering if maybe the fan is on its way out and not blowing as hard as it used to. Does anyone have any experience with this?

My experience with reduced airflow was either broken ducting, or disconnected ducting. If there's a restriction in the ducts, the furnace should shut off automatically. I'd look around the furnace outlets and make sure they are all connected. It's also possible that a piece of ducting has a hole rubbed into it, or something similar.

Basically, you need to do the best visual inspection you can. I doubt the fan motor is the culprit. There's a "Sail" switch in the furnace, that needs a certain amount of air blowing on it, to keep the furnace running. If the fan motor was slowing down, it wouldn't produce a sufficient amount of air across that switch.

x2 to what Gary said.

I'd suggest going out at night, unscrew a couple furnace vents off the cabinets, and stick a bright flashlight in there one at a time. Then look inside the cabinets and stuff to see if you can see light.

X3 on what Gary and Jon said.

Only thing to add, where you on battery only? There is a point when on battery only the voltage will drop some you will loose a little speed but be enough to keep the sail switch made. If you were plugged into shore power and the converter is working, then your back to searching for a blocked or open air duct.

We were on shore power so I guess that's not the issue. I pulled off the interior vent covering the furnace and looked inside. I was looking for something obvious but should go back and take a closer look at the vent duct work. It does seem rather thin and fragile. It didn't appear that it was detached from the furnace so there's no problem there, but maybe I'll start by pulling it off to see what the furnace is putting out for that vent line. If that's okay, maybe I can find a hole or something. Of course next weekend when we go out the weather man is calling for 90 so it certainly won't be an issue then.

Used the furnace a ton this past weekend with overnight temps in the 30s. The furnace worked great, but I still think the duct going to the front bedroom is weak. I could not find any holes or anything but cannot inspect what runs under the floor.

They are tiny hoses and a long run mine are the same way, well I only have one in the bath but the air flow is not much I even put a baffle inside of the discharge in the furnace it helped but it's nothing more then a draft. The camper heats fine just not much from the little vents.

Not knowing your exact layout, is the weak duct vent close to another vent? Reason I ask this is, on my bath room and bed room, the walls are the same wall, bath on 1 side bedroom on the other.

The bath vent if I look close has a vent that looks the same size however looking close at it, inside the vent it is chocked down to a much smaller opening. That same main hose feeds the bed room, so the small bath vent tee's off the 1 blower hose to that area verses running 2 hoses.

I our case this works OK as the bath is a small room and in the bed room we like it a little less cool or the furnace will roast you out of there in the middle of the night.

Also look at the back side of the furnace where the hose fitting twist into the blower housing. Some times the hose fitting falls out or part way out and then your are not pushing the air down the hose. I had this happened once. It must of came that way as when I put it back in, I had to twist it is almost a full revolution. There is no real normal way a hose will vibrate out a full revolution.

Hope this helps

John

All vent hoses are tight against the furnace, no leaks. The hoses appear to be the same size. Then the one going to the front bedroom goes under the floor while the others run along under the cabinets, two in the main living area and the third in the bathroom. The front bedroom one is attached to a rectangular floor vent similar to the kind you find in a residential application. There is a possibility this is the way it always was and I just didn't remember it correctly from one year to the next.
