Tires

We're new to trailering. We bought the best new tires we could find and found that trailer tires have a speed limit of 65 mph. We don't drive very fast, always keeping between 55 and 60. We found that trailers blasted by us on the interstates, even popups carrying a similar load with tiny tires, but huge fifth wheels as well.

We have met so many people that have had blowouts with very bad results. Is this speed limit a serious limit?

Man, traveling that fast towing a camper is just silly!!!

Slow down and enjoy the drive. I understand that you want to get where you're going, but imagine having a blowout at 75 towing a camper!! Who wants to see that mess.

Every time I see someone fly by us, I point it out to Cindy, and 88.9% of the time, we pull up beside them at the next exit or stop light. Turn the radio up, look around, get in the slow lane and enjoy the journey!!

I generally try to run at 62 mph, the truck is happy there, well actually so am I. I am glat that is my choosen speed, because I DID have a BLOWOUT I had about 18,000 miles on my original Sunline tires, heard a POP, looked in righthand side rearview mirror and saw a good size hunk of tread fly out from the wheel well. I was terrified to go see how much damage was done to Sunny, and where, who and "IF" it could be made to look like new again. I was so SO lucky as I only received a black scuff mark on the siding. Replaced all 4 tires the next day (had to wait as it was 5pm when I had blowout). I see all those "Flyers" everyday, as I travel on I-81 with my school bus, and all I ever think about is what's gona happen when a tire blows, will they be lucky like me or will they be yet another one that I see with their rig all tore up, or will they be another one that shuts down the interstate because the combo goes out of control. I might be a bit slower, but I feel more in control, and if it takes me an extra half hour or hour to get somewhere, I really don't care I hope to arrive safe. I also have a CDL license for my job, which I need to keep.

I agree slow down and enjoy the ride. Down here in Florida we see trailers crashed all the time in the winter. They dont hold up to well in a crash. I see at least one every year that looks like someone put a bomb in it. There is stuff all over the highway and trailers are usally destroyed. Check your tire pressure before each leg of your trip, your tires will last longer .

I had a tire blow at about 60 mph on an interstate. By the time I realized what happened and got pulled over this was what it looked like.

Damage to the camper was minimal. Some black scuffs and the trim around the wheel opening has a small crack. You should have seen the looks at the campground when I pulled in with that on for a spare. I checked all the tire pressures before we left home and this happened about a half an hour away. When we got back home I found a board in the yard that I mist have run over and damaged the tire. I replaced all four tires when I got home.

I just installed my pressure pro tire monitoring system this afternoon. I have this system on Sunny only for now, when I have extra $$$ I will also add the sensors to the truck. I did a good bit of research on this system before I purchased it, and I sure hope it is worth it.

DF4.6, I'd have that tire mounted in the garage or somewhere in the yard just because of how funny it looks!!

That is priceless!!

Kitty, keep us informed on the new system. I've been doing some research on that too. So I'm interested to see how it works for you.
