One piece receiver

Hi everyone,

I just bought my first camper, a 1985 T-2261, & had a question about the receiver. It was given to me with the camper, it is a one piece receiver with no adjustment on it. As it sits on my truck unloaded, the tongue seems to sit high. Now I tow boats & snowmobiles & on those it usually sits level or low on the tongue. I have priced the adjustable systems, but they are anywhere between $300-$400. My system is in fantastic shape, so I can't see spending the money on a new system. If I load the back of my truck & the front of my camper with weight, would that be enough to level out the camper. I have been towing for many years, just never a camper. I don't know if there would be an adverse affect if the tongue is higher with a WD setup. Everything else I towed was just a straight up ball receiver without WD. Thank you in advance for the help.

Hi Fastphilly

A picture here helps show us what you have in the way of a hitch that we can then give better info on.

You are using the words receiver for what I "think" you are talking about is a hitch shank. The "receiver" is the part attached to the truck with the 2" pin box on it.

Since you are talking a WD hitch, they use a shank that is 2" square and slides into the truck receiver and you slide the 5/8" pin in to hold it in place.

If I can see a picture of the brand hitch you have I may be able to offer some thoughts on how to help with the shank issues.

To the question on towing a high trailer, it has 2 negative side effects.

1. The axles loads if you have a tandem trailer setup are not equal. One axle, tires and springs are working harder and the other one is not working much. Over time this can be a problem.

2. Trailer sway. A high nose travel trailer can some times aggravate trailer sway the way the wind hits the top of the front of the camper. You may not find this problem until you get into windy conditions.

Glad to help on the hitch part once we can see what you have. And if there are any brand and model number on the hitch is good to know too.

Hope this helps and good luck with your new camper.

John

Hi John,

I have seen it posted as a shank on here. In my previous world of towing, it was always called a receiver. So I have some new terminology to learn! I will get some pictures tomorrow to show as I have a spot of floor to fix & will have to hook up. It is a tandem axle trailer & the hitch is a Reese. As soon as i get the pictures I will figure out how to get them up here. Thanks for replying so quick John!

Phil

I did not get to taking pictures over the weekend, as I found the whole back half of the floor in the camper is rotted! So that is taking precedence right now. I did find a receiver that that will drop 4 inches & then I can install the shank in there.
