Mission Tire issues

I met a couple yesterday who pulled in with a tri-axle fifth wheel toy hauler pulled by a '99-'01 F-350 DRW PSD. The toy hauler was an '07 (I forget the brand) and they had just bought it recently. They were from southern Illinois and had taken delivery of it, with very little instruction from the dealer.

They were pulling in and he seemed very uncomfortable backing in, so I went and coached him to help him get backed in. The thing was so long and with three axles, it turned like a ship. Had it had tandems, I probably could have estimated when he needed to turn better, but with full cranks on the wheel, it would barely turn with each time going back. I can't imagine owning one of these...

They happened to mention they had a stressful trip up, they had two blowouts. I go up to look at the tires, what do you know, they're Missions! I think they were like ST235/75R16E if I remember correctly. The first time I think they called for service, and then the second time they stopped at Lowes and bought like a 20 ton jack and some wood, so they were able to change the second on their own. He told me they were going to go get new tires for it before they travel any more.

I have a feeling that it was a combination of them just being Missions, the fact it was a tri-axle, and probably a bit of underinflation and sun rot as well.

So for those of us still running Missions, make sure to keep an eye on them and watch your tire pressures.

I have Mission tires on my 2007 Que they were made Dec.2005, so will be 5 yrs. old soon. I will be replacing them before my next trip, which will be in 2011.
I had good luck with them over 18,000 miles No flats or even any loss of air, (except for the small normal loss from sitting for sometimes 10 months)

I would like to replace them with Goodyear Marathons early in 2011, so I could a least get ones made in 2010.

I ck'd. two dealers and the ones they had (made in 2009) were made in CHINA. Other brands they had were about half the price of the Marathons also made in China. I don't mind paying twice the price BUT I would like the ones made in the USA. I tried calling Goodyear with no luck to any usefull info.

Has anyone bought Marathons in the last year that were made in the USA ?

I believe Tweety has bought Marathons made in the USA once they where back to making them here. She should hopefully pop in here soon.

I just replaced all 5 of my tires with Goodyear marathons. I had missions that were old (2004) and I ran a little under inflated, and also had a blowout recently. I insisted on the newest possible tires and they had ones sent in that are from the 24th week of 2010, nice and "fresh"! I got mine at a Goodyear Gemni tire store and they were totally understanding and agreeable to "fresh" tires. Actually the salesman that took care of me is an RV'er himself so understands the age out, and not wear out sincero with rv tires. They are being manufactured in the US again, at least thats what he said Goodyear told him when he inquired. The tires also say made in USA on them too.

Our new North Trail has Duro bias ply tires and we are considering changing to Maxxis radials. Anyone have any experience with Duro or Maxxis?

We chose Maxxis LT tires for our fiver.. I've heard a lot of bad things about their ST tires and nothing but good things, about their LT's.

I have had good luck with 2 sets of Maxxis ST. No experience with Duros but had a buddy who took them off his new camper due to having others who had issues.

Since Demann is no longer, when I need new tires it will be a toss up of can I still get USA Goodyear Marathons or Maxxis. But even then I will have to research it all over again as that is 4 years off right now.

Thanks for the info! Now it's up to us to decide whether to replace 5 tires on a new TT or go on the Adirondack trip with the Duro tires and hope for the best. I talked to Heartland customer service yesterday and was told that the Duro tire issue that had happened in the past was resolved. But......... there is always that doubt that the tires will hold up especially since they are not radials.

Just my 2 cents here...........

If I had a 2011 TT with 2 axles & Duro tires I would NOT replace them untill I had a problem because:
#1 ANY tire can fail. always that doubt
#2 A blowout on 1 of 4 tires is NOT as bad as it is on 1 of 2 tires (singe axle)
#3 The tires are NEW, not 3-5 yrs old.
#4 you are NOT taken a very long trip you are just going to up state NY, (not even a 4K mile trip to FL or CA etc.)

My personal example : I have a 2007 QUE TT with MISSION tires. I was told the Mission tires had lots of problems.
I gave them a chance. I did four 4,000 miles trips plus 2 smaller trips and had NO problems, or even air loss! And my QUE has only 1 AXLE.

Now I am ready for new tires as I said in a prior post...

Diane, I'd leave them alone for now. If anything, plan to replace them just before you run out of your coach warranty. I'd think if something happens in the mean time, any damage should be considered under warranty. Just make sure to watch the tire pressure and keep it up there at the max.

Many thanks for the great advice. It sounds premature for us to rush into new tires when we've only had the TT since April. I need to stop worrying about the tires now so I can plan for the trip.

I have run DURO tires on my popup and I now have them on the Sunline.
I have experienced NO PROBLEMS with them on either rig.

I always ran them at max rated pressure (cold) per the sidewall.
I always had them balanced when put on new and re-balanced after a year or so.

I prefer the stiffer bias ply tire on my 7000# Sunline. When I had the MAXXIS radials on the Sunline it felt... soft back there. If I could run LT truck tires on the Sunline, I would but I'd need to replace all the rims (too narrow) and I'd also have clearance issues so I'll stick with what works on my coach.

I realize there are concerns about foreign-made tires and some simply won't buy anything that's not made in the USA, but DURO has shown itself to be a quality trailer tire for me and a number of folks I've camped with over the years. I would not hesitate to recommend them to anyone.

I agree with luvrque... any tire can fail under the right circumstances. If these tires are less than 4 years old and are taken care of, they should be just fine for your trip.

It's great to hear that you've had no problems with the Duro tires. The TT was ordered in February 2010 and delivered in April 2010 so the tires should be fine. Thanks so much for posting your experience with the Duro's.
