Honda CRV

We're approaching 7,000 tow miles on our Honda CRV over the last 5 months. We're continually asked about the Honda and it's ability to tow the our 26 year old Sunline. It's worked like a champ and by year the time we return home in April it will be over 15,000 miles.

We really need more light trailers designed for a couple.

Our trailer tires are Goodyear Marathons and even after a couple thousand miles of dirt they are fine.

Of course one can't beat the 20 miles a gallon, oh yes we're in Iowa and gas is $3.17.

Off to Seattle

Update

For those with smaller Sunlines,

We're now have over 10,000 miles on our Honda/Sunline combination with no problems. This is our 8th cross country trip in an RV and have never crossed the multiple Rocky Mountain passes with more ease. Our Honda easily would beat our motorhome up all these passes.

Good travels to all, from the state of Washington

Hello Norm, I've been following along with your travels and have really enjoyed the frequent updates. Thanks for all the valuable info!

I posted the question about the Jeep Liberty Diesel and would like to ask you the same question on the CRV.

What are your takes on the CRV/Light TT Combo. What motor do you have in the CRV and is is AWD, 4X4, or only 2WD?

I think the CRV is only a gas motor correct? Do you find trouble with pulling up long grades with the motor overheating or just heating up, and have you done anything to it to compensate for this?

We're very seriously contimplating downsizing from our 2499 to something smaller and lighter, and would love to find a vehicle that would double our fuel mileage. Right now we average around 10-12mpg when in the mountains. If we're in the plains or down south where hills are something to laugh at, we can average upwards of 15-18mpg.

But if you can consistently get 20mpg, that would be very impressive for the amount of miles we log per year.

Any inof would be great! Thanks again for all the posts on your travels, I've really enjoyed them and cant wait to travel across Labradore like you and your wife did!

Honda CRV

I must admit we were concerned about the Honda and Labrador. There are no Honda dealers there. However it worked like a charm.

It is an on demand 4WD, 4 cylinder, preently the only engine avaialble though a diesel is on the way, and we have a manual transmission, no longer available until they introduce the diesel here.

We have no additional cooling and not once have seen the temperature if creep off normal. On my vehicles I mark the normal position of all gauges with a vinyl arrow making it easy to see a change.

As well as Labrador we just drove cross country, now in Seattle, and saw no temperature changes crossing the various passes. Of course we're not always in 5th on these long grades but who cares. In Labrador 5th was mostly unused.

If I had an automatic, I would probably add transmission cooling. We have a manual because we also have a motorhome and use the honda as a tow vehicle as well as a towing vehicle.

How many miles do you drive a year? One year we did a loop of the USA, 8000 miles over 7 months, and used some 1100 gallons or $3300. Really not too bad over 7 months.

We have come to like our little trailer and wish someone made a two person light trailer. We have been thinking we would like to get a Que, primarily for the larger bathroom and its shower. If we get a Que we would probably have to hop up one level of vehicle unless the Honda CRV diesel can handle it.

As to Labrador, we plan to go back in 2010 because they are opening up a new section of the road then that goes through absolutely no where for 250 milers and eliminates the 13 hour ferry ride.

I'm going to look into the Honda diesel to see what its capacity is and I'll let you know. They are already delivering in Europe where diesels are more readily accepted.

We've owned a number of Hondas and typically pass them on to kids and nephews and nieces. The engines literally seem to go forever.

I hope this answers your questions.

Safe Travels,

Norm Milliard

Just a heads up about the QUE. While it's a fantastic little trailer it only has a cargo carrying capacity of around 500#. I started weighing our "stuff" one day and was shocked how fast it adds up. The bathroom is nice though And the kitchen has alot of counter space.

Religious

We're almost religious about what we carry and truly try to be minimalistic. We've actually come to find it fun to see how little we can get along with and have come to realize that we own and have owned too much.

We are always amazed when other campers come up with a table and often tables, tarps and all kinds of things..

Though I agree 500 pounds is not much, I'm sure we don't have that much in our little Sunline, certainly no more than that.

Little Sunline

Our little Sunline has sought the sun, just as her owners have and we're now in Deming, NM. The Honda's doing fine and people are amazed we're living happily in a 12x7 foot space. This is our fifth month.

We've been in Deming for a week and have driven up to the Gila National Forest, a marvelous place and our net rip I plan to boondock there. The cliff dwellings are great and they give relatively free access. There are a number of other parks around here, City of Rocks, and Rockhound are two great ones for camping and Spring Canyon is great for hiking where there's Persian Ibex, some 400 that can occasionally be spied.

I learned at the Cliff Dwellings that park volunteers get free camping, free propane and $25 a day, not bed for such an ideal location for the mountain man (couple) in you.

Our Honda CRV continues to tow our home, no issues after an additional 3000 miles.

WE have a Spot that reports our GPS position when we push the button. This is where we were hiking today. It's nice for the relatives to see where we were. This site is also where the Ibex are.

Happily in NM where it's 68F,
