Ford Ecoboost

Ecoboost 3.5 motors, built before 2015, ie: first generation. Has bad cam phasers and timing chain in them. My 2011 only had 68000 miles on it. You are looking at $3500.00 to fix at the dealer. Ford will not cover unless it is still under warranty.
Traded mine in on a 2016 F 250.

Mine is a 2014 3.5 Ecoboost with 49000 miles. Was planning on keeping it for 200000 miles.

Hi Bobo,

Bummer on the F150... Congrats on the F250!!!

While not a cam shaft issue, my 2005 F350 when it was born... had a reverse gear snap ring issue in the transmission. Seems they had a customer appreciation period where if you had a snow plow truck and the snap ring let go and the entire reverse gear would let go, they would repair or replace the transmission for free. This program only ran a short while. After about 6 months into that build cycle, they fixed the issue and put in the better snap ring.

3 years ago we where pulling out a old wire cattle fence on our property. I was pulling the chain, wife driving the truck in grandma gear in 4 x 4 lo. The truck literally was just idling back and forth as we kept pulling up fence stuck in the weeds/dirt. By the end of the day, I was beat... lugging that chain can do that in ones senior years... We drove home, stopped in front of the garage to pull in, had to back up and nothing... $3,800 later I had a local shop rebuilt it and put in the new and improved snap ring. Been working great again... ever since.

The stories we have to tell.... My step dad owned his own garage business for 40 years. Did not matter much what brand, the things he would tell us about what broke... amazing. He had his own Chevy coupe (I forgot the name) have the end of the crankshaft snap off on the way home from a going out for dinner one night... Talk about being stranded... Nothing your going to do but call the tow truck...

Good luck on the F250. Does that have the 6.2 gasser in it? How do you like it?

Thanks

John

A coworker of mine has a 2011 F-150 3.5. He loves the truck but hates the engine. He bought it used, but he used to drive a lot at his old job, and now has about 130k on it. He's mentioned he can't believe how quickly it blows out spark plugs. He's had at least half a dozen sets of plugs in it in the time he's had it.

During a cold start, if you hear a metallic rattle for a couple of seconds, dump it fast. I ran full synthetic oil, changing every 8,000. Made no difference.

That 6.2 liter is what replaced the 6.8 V10 in mine. I must say, I have no issues pulling but she has a drink'in problem. I can only "wish" for 17. When I could get all real gas, I could do 15 on the highway on cruse doing 65 not towing. Now with all the ethanol in it, it is worse. I'll hang onto mine until fuel goes totally nuts and stays there. I'm good yet for another 100,000 miles. At least this is the plan at the moment.

I have a 2012 Ecoboost with 125,000 on the clock that I daily drive. I have had it since new and I have only had one issue with it. It was the CAC was causing condensation issues. There was a recall, and no issues since. Sorry to hear about your incident. My plan is to get a 250 or 350 diesel when this one gives up the ghost or when the kids start driving.
