2008 Tundra

I was down at the Toyota dealership getting some oil filters for the Tammys Scion and checked out the new Tundra. I test drove the 5.7l model 4X4. The big three had better look out that is a very powerful truck in a 1/2 ton skin. 381hp 400 lbs-ft six speed transmission with tow haul mode. It had a a lot of features of the top of the line trucks without the price. I was driving my f-150 when I went to the dealer and I almost left it there.

On the only other forum I read (my first trailer's fan site), there have been many converted truckers.

And as its one of the newest trucks designs out there (Chevy's HD's are new too), its attracting much attention. I think Ford's trucks are next, and then lastly, Dodge will be introducing a new line in 2009.

I hear (FWIW) that the Tundras are eating their trannies though....

Not sure- but that's what I have heard from a bunch of folks around here. Kinda shocking to hear about Toyotas not being too reliable though.

I'm still holding out for a Duramax or 6.0 GM 3/4 ton.... maybe when my blue beast gives up the ghost- but it's paid for, so motors and other parts are MUCH cheaper than new trucks.

Not only are Tundras eating trannies at about 40K miles but their 4.7 V8 is self destructing at about the same mileage. I'm curious to see how long the bigger engine lasts. Maybe it'll last longer than the tailgate that collapses if 3 people sit on it.

rich2500 is correct, the famous dancing frame video, quite an eyeopener .

ALL frames are of the same design, they're all ladder design frames. That's where the difference ends. It's all about the strength of the components in the design the frame modulous and the manner of attachment. Put out a search and you'll find the videos about how weak and how cheaply the Tundra frame is made and fitted in comparision to virtually any half ton frame. If it doesn't compare to a half ton frame it's never going to compare to a 3/4 ton frame!

seriously I'm just having a little fun with my bit about the flexy flyer frame,(that's why the smileys there) I have seen the video and it's something to see if you have not seen it,but that's as far as my experience goes on the frame. It won't be long and I will get one of these new tundras in to work on at work then I can see it in person with my own eyes, frames are nothing new to me I pull them and straighten them and in some cases replace them for a living(for over 20 yrs.) so trust me I know what to look for.The other week I got a new tocoma in to work on,it ended up needing a frame and was totalled but that bed design with being plastic or what ever it is they use, what a joke,I'm sorry I just don't see the fascination with toyota and it has nothing to do with imports,as a matter of fact I recommended to nickster to check out a Titan.

The fasination with Toyotas I think is there reliabilty. I have had 4 and have done anything more than maintance and wear items. The American car industry has such a black eye with reliablity issues. You can see it in the sales number GM is barely number one anymore.

I have 4 trucks in my company so I do have some knowledge of trucks. I am also in contact with many other contractors and this what I have found and some of there experiances.

2005 Dodge Cummins 38000 miles intercooler in radiator cracks pumps coolant int to tranny. Tranny destroyed. Dodge reasponse it isnt our problem you are out of warranty. 3 weeks later they agree to cover 1/4 of the 6000.00 bill. Man cant run his business losses thousnands of dollars

Ford 6.0l 8000 miles pumps engine dry from turbo seals. There was a sales note there was a problem in the hotter states with seal problems. They sold them anyways. Man with family and pets stuck in Texas on the side of the road in Aug. vacation ruined, had to rent truck to get trailer home. They fixxed the seals filled full of oil and it does it again in Alabama.

The Ford 5.4l spark plug problem. Ford isnt fixing these problems and there are thousands of these engines.

I found out why one of my nieghbor had red viynl letters on the tailgate of his truck that said the following. " Dont buy a Ford or buy from Autoway Ford they dont stand behind the junk they sell". Spark plug problem on 5.4l He drove around that way for 2 months they sent him a check. He drives past the dealership a dozen times a day in his business travels

Very close friend has 3 Duramax engines in his fleet of trucks he says one always seem to be in the shop. He loves the transmissions but the engines he isnt very happy with.

Ford early V10 plug problem

Dodge V10 Head cracks ( I have one an keep my fingers crossed)

My F150 Hard to keep this thing in alignment. The Ford guys just scratch there heads and align it again. They did give a set of tires after I hounded them for 6 months. Way to step up Ford I had to call the regonial rep about 6 times. I have about 17 hours of time in this tire alignment issue. At my business rate of 60.00 hour I am out about 1000.00.

These are just a few of my friends and fellow businessmen that are having some real problems. I could go on on

The quality problems just arent with the trucks. I have two nieghbors and friends that had PT Cruisers. Both had the transmissions go shortly after warranty expired.

One of them paid to have it replaced the dealer installed a new tranmission. It again gave them trouble 20000 miles down the road. He traded it in an bought a Acura. HE IS A RETIRED CHRYSLER WORKER.

The other just had his vehicle serviced and check out before warranty expired. It failed 900 miles later. The dealer fixed it and failed 17000 miles later. He bought a Nissan Murano.

http://www.consumeraffairs.com/autom...ord_spark.html

I own 3 Fords a 2005 f150(4.2L), 1985 f250(6.9l) ,1999 f350(7.3l). So I am not a Ford hater. I just very disapointed with what is being offered .

Stop in at this link and they wonder why they are having a hard time selling Fords. How many of these families are going to buy anouther one.

What you're saying about Toyota of the past may be correct, just as I've had superb service from Fords and Chryslers of the past. But we're not talking about the past. We're talking about the current crop of trucks. While current American brands aren't perfect, believe me, Toyota isn't even close. All the problems I've mentioned about Toyota are factual and are easily verified by the simplest Google search. What's more interesting though is that aside from mechanical problems Toyota now has a poor reputation for seat comfort, vibration and other fatigue related concerns..... and we haven't even touched on the absurd parts cost.

Go on some of the Toyota Forums and see what the owners are saying amongst themselves, it's not pretty! This is probably one of the best sources for information about any vehicle, let the owners inform you about the vehicle. Toyota is NOT what it once was, it is suffering from getting as big as it has and the problems aren't going to go away quickly. Even the country of Japan is sponsoring a class action lawsuit against Toyota because they refused to recall a number of cars and japanese citizens have been killed because of steering failures.

I don't want to go on sounding like a broken record but the fact is, no manufacturer is perfect and, with vehicles rapidly becoming more complex, the cost of ownership does go up. My condolences to your neighbor who bought the Acura. My friend's neighbor also has an Acura. He's had 4 transmissions in his Acura with 45,000 miles on the odometer.......

Yup, again, that was then, this is now. I don't buy anything based on past experience. I do research and find out what's best now.

And the MDX is another problem child.

I'm glad my truck is still solid....I'm glad my truck is still solid....(and so on)

A few parts here and there, and I've put 127K or so on her myself, paid 18000 used (42K miles), so far, nothing major.

A little TLC and she keeps on kicking! *phew* Like Sunlines, they just don't make them like they used to (no profit in reliability and quality- build them to fail, and you have job security!)

The incentives have been pretty big in Florida. We where one of the states where the housing bubble popped. They just arent selling alot of trucks down here. The showroom down here look like ghost towns. I was also dealing directly with the manager. If they keep talking recession it will just get worse for the car dealers. There loss can be your gain if you are in the market.
