Wrecked 03/04 299SR found... possibilities!

Saw the ad on CL about RV parts for sale and it turned out to be a Sunline 299SR.
I talked to the original owner about it and he gave me the name of the towing company. He said that he had to turn it over to them, since he couldn't afford storage fees.

The towing company told me this morning, that it had already been sold for salvage.. I cringed!!

I called the salvage company and was told it had already been crushed.. I was heartbroken! Just to be sure, I stopped by the salvage yard and looked around.

To my surprise, it's still there!!!!!!!! I went inside and looked around, as well as taking lots of pics. It's in pretty bad shape, but is a testament to Sunline quality! I grabbed the owner's booklet out of it and headed to the office.

I asked the guy if they would hold it, until after Saturday. I also asked how much they would want for it, the way it sits now. $800 was the price I got.

I will be posting pics of it later, since I am on my blackberry now and can't.

I/we may try to get it, for parts.. We will see!!

Gary, keep us posted on how you make out.

I'm half-heartedly looking for a frame, so depending on your plans, we might be able to work something out.

Kitty and I just went to look at it. The microwave and cooktop are already gone, but the Dometic 2852 fridge is still there. Someone also took the kitchen faucet. The black tank almost looks as if it will fit our 320 and is still intact. The pipe going to the gray tank is broken, but I couldn't really tell the extent of the damage. Could not see the fresh tank.

The tongue jack is gone, but we still have an extra hand-crank one. There are lots of parts on it that are in great shape and we are going to try to get it.

The salvage yard removed the wheels and tires, but they are hopefully going to put them back on.

We also took more pics and they will be posted later tonight..

H'mm I have seen this TT before. But when it was still in use.

It showed up on my axle rebuild post now over a year ago.

See here when the owner showed me what happend to his 2004 T299SR

And here is Gary's pic. The rear axle is different then the front.

This owner also had a 99, 3/4 ton Suburban at the time. I do not know for sure but.. it sure sort of points that direction.

If it is the same owner, that TT has a faily new rear axle. The pic Gary showed has an EZ lube rear hub and a standard lube front hub. And it just dawned on me. I have seen the side of that camper before??? What are the odds...

Those pics make me sad. Though, it sure looks like it's worth $800 to me! Not for rebuilding, but for parts. There seem to be many good windows, cabinets, etc worth saving. Heck the A/C unit alone has got to be worth a few hundred bucks used.

John,

In your pic, it's the front axle that had lost it's drum. My pic was taken from the slide side.

Also, the camper only has the CS3000 converter. Even though the book says that they had upgraded to the CS6000.

Yes I noticed you took your pic from the other side. The newer axle is the one under the furnace. Which on this camper floor plan I do belive is the front axle. Slide is in the front. You can see the new style EZ lube grease cap on the front axle which lines up with the person who showed me on his coach in my axle rebuild post by the furnace location.

Bummer on the converter. Which is odd. My 2004 T310SR made in Oct 2003 had the CS6000???? Why would a 2004 T299SR made in December 2003 camper have a 30 amp unit???

Hi Kathy,

The owner of this rig suffered a back injury and from what Gary heard from him is that he's in a lot of pain, so I hope he starts feeling some relief soon.

Also, while Gary was speaking to JohnB on the phone last night, John mentioned that you were looking for some of the ceiling lights with the "double" switch, if so, as soon as I get out to look around in Sunny14, I should have some for you.

As of right now, Gary & I are still proceeding with the process of purchasing the 299SR to salvage anything usable off it, and there appears to be a LOT. The maple cabinetry is in wonderful shape, even the mirror inserts are in tact. The jackknife sofa look to be fine, the swivel rocker is dirty, so not sure it is clean-able. Of course pictures look awful, but once all the "stuff" that was throw around in the crash is picked up, it will reveal just how WELL this Sunline held together. And I have seen "SOB" after a rollover and they DID NOT fair as well as this Sunline.

I just feel so sorry for the owners, as they had special ordered this wonderful 299SR. It was sold by Wayne from Stoltzfus RV in Adamstown, PA.

Well, gotta get some work done around here, maybe go out and check on our black tank repair (IF it fails, we hope to take the one off the 299SR as it is not damaged.

Kitty

Hi Pam & Steve,

It was a custom order unit from Stoltzfus (Wayne sold it). Talked to Lee yesterday, and he agreed that there should be lots of salvage-able items on it. Seeing it in person really lets you see how well put together these Sunlines are (But he** we already know that). SO, if things work out, Gary & I will be doing a "Sunline Tear-Down". JohnB wants to get in on the action, I think But several hundred miles between the two of us.

Well, I'm gonna go out and look at our intack Sunny

Kitty

Thanks Kitty (& Gary too)....I'm sure you noticed many changes in the Sunlines - this being your 14th....but one of the things I did not like was the switching of the double lights to a single switch...way too much light in such a small space.

Let me know what you have and how much - I'll send you the $$$$.

Thanks
Kathy

Got an update for everyone interested..

Spoke to the salvage yard today and was told that the wheels and tires were gone. I have three of the 6-lug wheels and got four free tires from the local CW.

I also learned that the front axle assembly was replaced last September and has less than 500 miles on it.

Our plan right now, is to pick it up Saturday morning and bring it to it's new home. Once here, it'll be put on it's stabilizer jacks and I'll start working on getting the slide out. From there, it will be a quick tear-down, since the chances of repairing it are not good.

I begged John to come help me with this project. My fingers are still crossed!

Gary

H'mm, will this be Sunny 15 or 14 1/2??

Gary, the wheels are gone, bummer. I'm assuming all the lugs nuts are gone with them too. I do not remember seeing them in the pics.

Have to work at work this weekend. Can't come out and play, wish I could.

So you take delivery of the tractor to go on your new trailer when???

On a side note, did you find out how/what happened? I'm a little puzzled as to why the back corner fell apart like it did and the rest of the coach didn't.

Just what we need, another project. Well, first order of business once it gets home, will be to remove all "the trash" that is strewn around on the inside. That will make things look a great deal better, and let us see more of what we actually have to deal with. Gonna be a lot of usable stuff to salvage. I wonder if the "Shub" retractable shower door survived? ( not sure it even has a SHUB. If it did, I know where it's going !!!! Think we outta call it Sunny 14.5, since it won't be a complete Sunline
