Why is my frig suddenly not staying on?

My frig...RM2652...is acting up. I only use it on electric, and very rarely on gas, and in prep for my next campout I went and turned it on yesterday morning. I just push the on/off button to turn it on...I hear it go through the tick tick tick sequence and then ignite. All seems well and usual...that amber check light is off, and the frig is apparently operating. That is until next I check last evening and nothing is cold or cool or anything...and that check light is back on too. Now this has been my typical use of it all along so I'm dummied up as to what's gone wrong here. Your thoughts are appreciated. I did use it on Gas function during Hurricane Irene several weeks ago and it operated fine then.

I leave on my trip tomorrow morning so hopefully some fix is possible...somehow I get the feeling I'm overlooking something really obvious too, since I don't use this as much as many of you folks do...so old memory issues often defeat me at the most inopportune times...

Thanks gang!

OK, someone has to ask: Do you have gas coming to the refer? How do you know (one way or the other)? Have you tried going through the re-ignition sequence? Results?

I had no intention of using the gas. I didn't turn it on at all. I use the frig on electric always...with the one exception of during the recent hurricane as mentioned.

I have been through a few reignition cycles so far it manages to shut off in a short while...this on 120 AC...not gas.

Bob,

If you have it set up exclusively for 110vac, it should not be attempting to ignite. Your Gas/Auto switch should be set to Auto, and if the 110vac is present, it will never try to ignite. The fact that is trying to ignite suggests that it isn't getting 110vac.

Pull the outside vent cover for the fridge. There should be a 110vac outlet in there that the fridge plugs into. Use a tester or even just a lamp and make sure there is power to the outlet. That may sort things out. While you are back there, look around and see if there is any obvious that might be a problem.

And double check the breaker. I usually turn the breaker off and then back on. Sometimes they trip and still look like they are on so turning it off and then back on takes care of that.

Yes Steve, all good ideas which I will pursue once I get home from work. Thanks for the suggestions! I'm pretty sure I could hear the pre-ignition ticking followed by what sounded like ignition and true enough the electric function doesn't sound like anything...so something is a bit off...I'll report back later on.

Bob:

That AUTO/MANUAL switch is real easy to bump. Like Steve said, in AUTO with 110vac, the gas should not even try to ignite.

Also, you said you didn't turn on the gas, so the gas operation is probably working OK. it would have ignited on what gas was remaining in the line and once that burned off, it would time out and the CHECK light would come on. Definitely sounds like either a switch or 110vac issue.

Good Luck,

Mack

My RM2652 a 2002 vintage has a "gas only" switch. If yours is the same be sure that is not over riding the auto switch. If it is attempting to ignite sounds like it is not even concerned with the 110 v at all.

The "Auto" light should be on for electric. After checking the breaker as Steve mentioned, check the GFI outlet(s). The one in the bathroom controls mine..... I found out the hard way. As everyone mentioned, you should not hear the gas even attempt to start.

Well my wife became the hero of the day and got the frig going just fine. She says she turned it off and then back on and pressed the gas button on also...then she noticed the cord which attaches to that inside slide control gadget had been dislodged and she plugged that in and adjusted the slide to cold instead of where it was at warm...all casualities of the last cleanup we did after our last campout I think.

When I checked after work it was nice and cold as it's suppose to be. Thank you all for coming to my aid on short notice, gave me the comfort of knowing it was only a matter of a few tweaks and it would hopefully be ok again...and so it was...

Now we are going camping for a few days...need to relax
