Well, I just spent the last 20 minutes reading through the Sunline portions of the book and the Atwood water heater manual. No mention of that process at all anywhere. Must have something to do with the later models where all controls are remoted to the galley
Like I said originally, we leave the breaker off 99% of the time as most of our camping is dry camping, and I don't want any chance of the electric side of the HW heater to engage when I run the generator. I have also taped the rocker switch on top of the heater in the off position so it can't accidentally be switched on.
