Tire Bulge/Bump/Blister

What causes this? Cheap tire? Road hazard? Failed cords? Other internal failure? Doesn't appear to be any damage on the outside. Tire is pretty new. Just got it last year. Always keep 'em aired up to 50# - per spec. I don't run them over 60 mph (ST's). Found this on the driver's side after we got home from a camping weekend 6 hours away. It's soft enough to push in pretty easily. I always check tires and bearings at every stop. Never noticed a problem until this.

I had a Firestone like that 14 years ago...back to the dealer! May even be a recall.

Wouldn't I need the receipt? I don't have it. It's a Walmart tire/wheel.

Dale, If you charged your tire purchase, Walmart may have it on record; all you need to do is take your credit card with you when you go to the returns counter. Many of the chain stores, like Lowe's, can look up past credit card purchases. It's very handy when you don't have a receipt but also a little scary to think how much info these places have on their customers.

Walmart probably has a record of the sale if you just push the issue a bit. If it turns out to be a recall there is no problem getting replacement. Just google "any recalls on xxxxx tires? "

Whatever you do,don't just leave the tire with them until you are satisfied....PROOF...
And its not blown so its not your fault...defective.

I found my credit card transaction, bought it in March. Might be good news:

Good news! I had a copy of my credit card transaction, a scan of the actual tire sticker, and a copy of their warranty - if necessary (not to mention plenty of pictures). Yeah, I was ready for them. Their computer said they had one in stock, but couldn't find it, so they gave me a 100% refund. I'll visit another one of their stores to get a replacement tomorrow. There are 5 Wally stores here that carry tires - not to mention Sam's.

Walmart is pretty good at refunds and no real questions.

That blister seems to look like an internal separation. If your ears were closer to the tires while towing you may have heard that thump, thump thump. You know that same sound we hear when our wives hit us over the head with a rolling pin?

Seriously, I wonder if that is a new tire or a retread? From what I understand retreads were banned years ago. Cheap name or brand name?

LOL! I know that sound!

It's a cheapie, Jerry - Walmart's "Hi-Run" pre-mounted tire. Always run them, and never had a problem before. A coworker told me yesterday that he had Michelins do that, too, so I'm not real concerned about the "cheapies" doing it - as long as they don't make a habit out of it. <G> BTW, the Michelin dealer wanted him to go to the factory (literally) to get his replaced, since it was a "factory defect".

Picked up a new tire yesterday, so we're good to go again.

When it comes to trailer tires I always go the extra length. Because the trailer is further away from me and we don't feel immediate response of what the tire is doing. You and I have the same trailer, one axle so if something goes wrong serious doodoo can result.

haha on Michelin. Some companies get too confident and think we'll bend over for them? Nah, we're the consumer.
Yes, at least with Wally world or with Carlisle, we'll find a store almost anywhere and yes, Walmart won't give any hassle.
I know all actual tire shops handle the Carlisle too. Most of us are not that far from any good replacements when traveling.

I also find that when we're at a campground and we strike up a conversation with my Mr. Neighbor Camper, and most of us swap info on TTs. I find that few people know much about their trailers "Oh, I let my dealer worry about that stuff" That's a sad approach.

I think every driver/owner should know as much about his TT as he can for safety and for knowledge. How many horror stories have we all heard about dealers that don't do what they say they do or where they cut corners, at our expense. Sorry for the tangent but it's important

Agreed, Jerry. I am pretty anal/paranoid about ours, too. At every stop, as soon as the wheels stop turning I'll visually inspect them and feel around the tire and in back of the hub for any signs of heat and hints of non-normal tread/sidewalls and/or bearings. I always check pressure on "cold" tires before we start a trip - and use the same tire gauge. I won't start out unless the pressure is within 1# of spec and between them. So, yeah - I do everything I can to prevent issues.

I have also gone as fast as 70 - for a short period, to see how she handles. For me, the "feel" is vital and I need to know how it normally feels under various circumstances. Normally, 60 is max. Less than ideal road and wind conditions will reduce that max. I presume that manufacturers under-rate the speed ratings a little bit for their own protection, but I go one further for my protection and still stay below their rating.

The last leg of our trip before this happened was about 3 hours long. I consider myself lucky that it didn't develop right after we started on that leg. I doubt it would have lasted very long, and I don't know how it would have reacted if I'd have a spontaneous blowout at 60 with a single flipped axle under that relatively narrow-track TT. Don't want to find out, either. Could have been messy. I always do opt for maintaining control of any vehicle, even if it means drifting off the road when "stuff" happens.

You ever consider tire pressure monitors? I use them on my TT and boat trailer. I use TST. Not only do they monitor pressure they monitor tempature. A bad wheel bearing will raise tire temp and send an alarm.
