Tears in awning fabric

Hey y'all - long time, no write. I was sitting under my awning last week around noon, looked up and saw slits o' sunshine coming through. The fabric is opening up in several places along the top near the fastening rail (where the awning is exposed to sunlight all day, every day). It looks as if an X-acto knife-wielding vandal has been at work. Oddly, the damage is only on the frontmost ¼ of the awning (the tongue end).
What is the best way to repair this? Other than putting one of those solid covers over the rolled up awning, is there a way to protect the fabric from sun damage?

They do sell the fabric not a bad job for two people. I replaced mine last year it was under $200.

Hi Teach,

Good to hear from you. Yes I know the problem. The last 1 foot of awning exposed to the sun takes a beating. For the future after your repair suggest using 303 Aerospace UV Protectant on the entire area that is exposed. It makes a difference. This works best with the plastic, vinyl or rubber are new, but it still will slow down the degrading even on an older material. It will not fix the underlying damage, but will slow any new damage down. It needs to be applied about every 3 months when the camper is living exposed to the sun.

For a repair, there is one way I have used to buy me time until I put a new awning on.

They make RV awning repair tape. It is clear and you just clean the area first, let it dry well and then put the tape on.

This brand is what I would recommend. Life Safe RV awning repair tape.

Amazon has it https://www.amazon.com/Incom-Manufac.../dp/B001Y8NEX2

And Dryers has it a little cheaper but freight may add into this too. I have bought from them and had a good experience. INCOM 3" x 15' RV Awning Repair Tape - Repair Kits - RV Maintenance

And they have a video

Boy, it sure did. I ordered two rolls and plan to put the tape on the underside, too.
I have some 303 and will add that to my maintenance regimen. I just don't do ladders as well as I used to.

Thanks again. I'm still lurking around here so be forewarned.

Hi Teach,

I've used the same awning tape that JohnB mentioned on our Sunline awning when we were starting to get rips in it.

It worked great.

I've also used VLP Leather and Vinyl Repair to seal awning seams that were leaking on our current trailer. You can get this on Amazon or at Walmart.

Good luck.

I need to talk to a friend's son and offer him some $$$ to go onto the roof or use an extension ladder. (These trailers with flush-floor slides are feets taller than my Sunline.) I'm planning to clean the area with soap and water first, dry it, then wipe the area to be covered with alcohol to remove any residue. Good plan?
I can use the 303 immediately (while he's still up there), right?
I tell you, folks who can park their trailers at their homes should try to imagine what it would be like to have your baby 11 miles away, parked in a tight place (can't put slide out) with no access to water or electricity. I'll have to tote two yard sprayers, one with soap and water, the other with plain water, just to do the preliminary washing. Count your blessings my brothers.

Hi Teach,

Yes, your cleaning and prep for the tape is dead on. Good!

And yes, once you get it put on, 303 right after is A OK. He can 303 the entire sun exposed outside wrap of awning too.

A storage yard, yes, I feel for you. That is one travel trailer experience I have never had. I'll just take you word for it without question!

Thanks

John

My '97 awning is torn away at both ends of the trailer, in addition to a handful of pinholes like you describe. As a temporary repair until I can fix it correctly, I taped both ends, on both sides, with white Gorilla tape, after a good cleaning. One end started to pull up some on the top where the awning material was pretty wrinkled, but all in all so far so good for a couple months outside.

I definitely would recommend the correct awning tape as John described, or full replacement. But if you are looking for a temporary fix, especially one to get you home, this seems to work well and is available from many hardware stores.
