T1550 furnace issues

We have a 1991 T1550 and the furnace isnít working properly. Weíve read the manual and it says it should just automatically turn on when switched on. The fan kicks in but it only blows cool air. Is there a pilot light we are supposed to light?

No it's automatic as soon as they is a demand for heat. The biggest cause of failure is the ignitor board assuming your propane tanks is turned on. It often speeds things up if you light the stove burners first.

I tried turning the stove on first. We are going to try lighting the pilot light. When we took the grill off the furnace we found directions. After that we give up

I found that I had let it sit awhile..I did all of the burners and the hot water and was searching for issues when all of a sudden it was running! Previous owner hadn't used it at all so it just needed time.. happy it worked because last October at Killbear it snowed!Resized_20181028_084703_1590_01~01.jpg

Hi,

As mainah stated, there is no pilot to light on the furnace. It is all automatic. Assuming your furnace is the original from Sunline.

What is supposed to happen is:

When the T stat calls for heat, the fans runs first to purge the combustion chamber.

After a timed period of purging (a minute or so) if the fan is spinning fast enough, a safety switch called a sail switch closes. Then the gas valve will open and the electric ignition will start sparking. If LP gas is flowing, the burner will light and heat will come. This area seems to be where you have the problem.

Is your battery fully charged? and are you plugged into 120 VAC shore power?

The fan motor has to run fast enough to close the safety sail switch. If it is not creating enough wind pressure, then the gas valve and ignition will not start. That is something you can check or let us know.

If the stove burners are working then the LP gas is purged enough the furnace should fire off after 1 or 2 tries.

If the battery is fully charged and the even more so, the camper plugged into shore power, odds are higher the fan is running fast enough. Then is issue starts in the internal controls of the furnace.

If you are electrically friendly with 12 VDC electricity, have a voltmeter or test light and have a working knowledge of LP gas systems, we can help you troubleshoot the furnace. Just ask and tell us the model number of the furnace, the tag is outside behind the grill on the side of the camper. Take pics too and post while have the grill off. They help show us what you are up against.

Is this the first time you have used the furnace since you bought the camper? Trying to back in if you bought like this or it worked for a while and then broke.

Hope this helps

John

Hi Rinstah,

There may be a mix up on our end with what exact furnace you have. It seems some of the older small campers (including 1991) may have had a hydro flame furnace with a Piezo lighter which is not a fully automatic system. As the camper models became larger in the same model year, electronic ignition was supplied. Yours may not be a fully automatic furnace. We need the model number to help better.

Please post the model number of the furnace and ideally a pic of the outside of the furnace with the grill cover off so we can help better. The model label should be found once the grill cover comes off.

Hope this helps

John

Thanks

John
