Sunlines with bent frames, which WD hitch are you using ?

OK< I'm thinking again, and yes I know that is dangerous for me. So, my question is: If you have a bent frame, WHICH type hitch/sway control are you usnig??

This line of thought is geared towards the "newer 05 - 07" bending frame design, as we KNOW that JohnB has an '04 T-2499 with huge tongue weight, with the HP system and no bending.

I have the Reese dual cam high performance on the 2499. On all my previous Sunlines, I used the Reese dual cam (non high performance version).

I got to thinking about the way these two systems attach to the tongue.

The HP version is attached with two bolts inserted thru holes that are drilled thru the tongue near the bottom.

The older dual cam system attached with large "u" bolts straddling the top of the tongue and the cam was attached on the bottom of the tongue with nuts connecting it to the U bolt.

In my thinking ( ), I believe the older version allows the "force" of the dual cam to be spread more evenly over the rail width of the tongue, where with the HP version, the force of the cam is basically applied to the bottom of the tongue rail, that we have also drilled two holes into.

I'm curious to see if the bent frames are with both type WD/Sway control systems, or just the HP system?

Just a blonde sitting home pondering this issue

Kitty

I have the Equal-i-zer 1000 lb. model.

I had to scrounge this hitch up myself as my dealer claimed he couldn't get it and I didn't need it. His choice was to drill 8 holes in each A-frame leg for a chain bracket and friction anti-sway. I did like the design and clean appearance of the Equal-i-zer, but the main reason I picked it was... no holes.

I definitely agree that the current design of our wd hitches contributed to this problem. The brackets are levered off to the side of the A-frame and that's exactly what gives the bars the leverage to twist the A-frame and bend the header. If the bars had been attached directly under the A-frame this leverage wouldn't exist and the frame wouldn't twist. Of course it might have bent in the middle instead because it still isn't strong enough

I use a maybe 15 year old Reese 750 Lb WD hitch. Friction bar anti-sway.

About as basic as you can get.

Three links brings me up to level with a Chrysler Aspen.

Dave:

I have the same 15 year old setup that you described. I hope it lasts for as long as I pull a Sunline. I like to follow the KISS theory (Keep It Simple, Stupid). The new dual cam setups sound like more hassle than I need, based upon the discussions on this board. My TT rides level and I've never experienced any sway.

I am using a Blue Ox Swaypro with 1000 bars. Usually run with 3 links hanging, but go to 4 when loaded for an extended stay trip.

I have been reading about the bent frames but haven't commented partly because I haven't been able to post pictures yet. I have a 2005 2499 and only my header is showing any bending, and it is outward around the battery disconnect switch. This trailer was bought by the orginal owner in Michigan and he put a hensley 1000 lb bar hitch on and I bought it with the hitch attached. It has never been off since it left the dealer. Maybe the extra pivot points of the hensley have helped keep it from more damage. I have 2 heavy batteries that go all across my battery tray also. My tongue weight was measured last year by me at 950 lb.

thanks dave

I have a equalizer hitch on mine but I have a 25ft Fleetwood Prowler.
My header is bent and I have a crack in the main frame above the right rear spring mount about 2 inches long. The trailer has a Lippert frame.
I am going to have a welder repair both problems.
