Sunline Solaris Exterior Coating

I have a 2006 Sunline Solaris (model T-2553). The coating on the siding has started to come off in 1 area. Underneath is very clean and smooth but the coating in this area is dirty and will not clean. Any advice?

Hi Brian-Becky

Welcome to Sunline Owners Club. Glad to have you with us .

Now to your siding issue. What type of siding do you have on the camper, the aluminum corrugated siding or the smooth fiberglass siding? There are different causes pending what type of siding it is.

Did you buy the camper new or used? Was this spot there before you took ownership?

And what cleaning product do you use to wash the camper with?

If at all possible any chance of a picture of what you are looking at? This can help of point us to give better answers to what you are seeing. If you need help posting a pic let us know, we can help there too.

Give us a little more info from the above questions and we can type back some possible things to look for to help.

And again, welcome aboard.

John

It has corrugated aluminum and it was purchased new. I had it cleaned once by the company I purchased from and it started happening a little after that. I personnally have used mild detergent and black streak remover from dealership (not sure the brand). It seams as though there is a rough coating on the aluminum around the top half. It is very clean where the coating is missing. I will try to get pictures this week. Thanks for the response John. (and of course the company went out of business before I realized it was happening)

Hi Brian

OK now we know what you have. Well, this much I can tell you the siding on your era camper has what is called Krystal Kote on it. I "think" this may be the manufacture of it. TradeWinds International KrystalKote Do not know for sure as it seems to be used in a lot of applications and there may be different products with the same name. And there are other RV manufactures claiming to use it on their campers. Maybe some one else can confirm if that is indeed the coating we have on our campers.

This much I know about it, it will come off and can be dissolved. Very hard cleaners will do it's toll. What ever one does do not use acetone or anything in that family near it or you will have a silver camper...

While acetone is not normally used to wash the entire camper, some of the cleaners used straight with no water can be as bad. Some one on the club a while ago used something and it took the paint and all off. They left it on too long. Cannot remember the name of the product.

Not being able to see up close what you are seeing, I'll ask as mine gets filled with black streak stuff in the spring coming out of winter. The coating is sort of dimpled. I'm trying to describe it in words but think very small 1/32" dia ball point pen tip size dimples and lots of them. They are worse in some areas while areas are more smoother. The black crud gets in those dimples and is hard to come out. But I can get it out.

Not all the siding on the camper has this coating. If you look at the piece of siding that has the full length pin striping decal along the center of the camper, that is smooth aluminum where it is white. It does not have the Krystal Kote on it. Or at least did not in 2004. I have gold siding and it is not on those parts either.

If that is what you are talking about then this is what I use.

For heavy deep black steaks mess

  • Spray the surface with a water hose so it is wet.
  • Spray on Awesome brand liquid cleaner right from the bottle.
  • Use a Mr. Clean Magic eraser and scrub. Do not have to do it hard, just rub.
  • Rinse well with hose until there is no more suds running off with it.
Do a small section at a time, like 2' x 2' or 3' x 3' if you can get away with it and then rinse off. If still any black specs are left, do it over again. You need to keep a full wet edge as if it starts to dry the brown black yuk will harden back on again. And need to be done over again... I have tried a full range of black streak cleaners and this combo is the only one that can get the dimples clean that I have found.

For general washing I dilute the Awesome down in a 5 gallon bucket of water and just general wash the camper like a car with a brush on a pole. Wet surface with hose, wash and rinse. Then go back and do spot treatment on black stuff with spray bottle of Awesome and Mr. Eraser. and rinse.

If what you are describing is the normal black streak stuff stuck down in the dimples of the Krystal Kote then the cleaning above will help. If this does not sound like what you are seeing, well need pics or more description or both.

OR maybe someone else has run into something different but this is what I have seen and how I get out of it. The 1st cleaning in the spring is really tuff.... And if anyone else has an easier way, please speak up! This long slide camper has a lot of square feet on it...

Here is the Awesome. You find it at Dollar General and some other dollar stores LA's Totally Awesome Products

Here is the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser Mr. Clean Magic Eraser Original can find them at the grocery store, Wal-mart, etc. in the cleaner aisle.

Hope this helps

John

Thanks for all the advice. As soon as the weather gets warmer, I will be trying this. Can the coating be reapplied?

Brian

Hi Brian

H'mm I do not know. It may be able to but do not know what is involved. Maybe try the company I linked and see if it is their product. If it is they may be able to direct you to some people who apply the coatings.

If you find out anything, let us know. This is the 1st this type of discussion has come up that I'm aware of. Would be good to know.

Depending on how bad you want it, need it fixed, and where it is, you can change the siding. Not impossible. Frank here on the forum just bought an entire camper worth of aluminum siding for the camper he is building. I'm sure someone sells the coated siding. And I too have been into taking siding off and putting back on repairing my slide. Once you understand how it goes on, it is not that hard.

Good luck

John

Took it off? Wow!

I usually go around the trailer every other year or so with straight Awesome and a Mr. Clean eraser. Clean it, then hose it off. When I finish the trailer, I wash it with the car wash soap like I normally do. I don't normally Awesome everything, but just where most of the streaks are and the non-krystal-koted metal.

Korkay

That's it John

The gallon I have just has on it Korkay spray cleaner, they make several products, it coast 12-13.00 a gallon but you use so little of it it will last a long time. I use it to wash vinyl siding on house. I showed it to trailblazer and happy campers last year at Buttonwood, don't know if they ever purchased it. I do the black spots on the camper then wash with car wash. ( ArmorAll ) Ed
