ST205/75R15 Trailer Tire Wheels

Looking at a 2004 T1950 wheel size Sunline used.

Asking the group that has the T1950 or any another 5,500 or 7,000# GVWR Sunline with ST205/75R15 Load Range C tires on it.

Do you know if Sunline used 5" wide rims or 6" rims on your camper?

It seems the call out on the ST205/75R15 is to use a 5.5" rim. But finding that rim width has been hard. It is like if they make it, it is not common. Thinking they must of mounted on a 5" or 6" wide rim, just trying to confirm which. The going thought is they used the 5" but trying to confirm more. I cannot recall what our prior 2004 T2499 had for rim size as it had this size tire.

Thanks

John

Did some checking on Tredittire.com, but don't know if they were Sunline's supplier. However, they are a pretty comprehensive OEM supplier today including our current Arctic Fox. They do show a couple of 14X5.5", but interestingly no 14X5". The couple of 15s I checked are all 15X5" or 15X6" with varying bolt patterns.

I bought new 15X6" for the 2499 when I upgraded to LT tires so I know the OEM were 15X5". Did the 1950 come with 14" wheels? If not, it would have to be 15X5". Either way, the rim width shouldn't matter to you for ST205, but if 1950 has 14" wheels they could be 5.5"

Thanks Henry,

In 2004, Sunline changed a number of things in an upgraded design across the board. Starting in 2004 model years, the T-1950 and other smaller dual axle camper took a boost in GVWR from 5,000 to 5,500 GVWR. And it seems the up'ed the tires from 14" to the ST205/75R15 LRC to go with the 5,500 # GVWR.

So we are in the 15' wheel size. Sunline Fan had one of his older ST205/75R15 tires from Sunline and it was on a 5" wide rim also.

I also found these posts with 2004 and newer T1950's and they indicate the 15" tire as well.

http://www.sunlineclub.com/forums/f6...0-a-13155.html

http://www.sunlineclub.com/forums/f7...ize-14870.html

http://www.sunlineclub.com/forums/f7...ain-13776.html

So unless the one I'm looking at is an odd ball, it should have the 15" tires on it.

At this point from your T2499 and Sunline Fan's older rim, 5" wide seems to be the one. I wish I would of documented my own 2004 T2499 better on the rim width.

Thanks again for the help. Greatly appreciated.

John

Hi John,

Had some time tonight so I started digging. I completely forgot that newer VIN stickers have the wheel size on it as well as the tire size. So if you can have the seller send you a pic of the VIN sticker on the outside, that will confirm.

I checked all my files, including the archive, and I don't have a pic of a VIN sticker for an '04 1950. I do have one from a 2199 though, which confirms 15x5 with JJ rim contour.

Hello! Been following this tire thread, ours is a 2000 T1950 with 14", is there a possibility of changing to 15? Did they change more than the wheel size-wheel well, springs, axle?? TIA

The T-1950 did change from a standard 14" wheel to a 15" wheel between the 2003 and 2004 model years.

Hi,

As SunlineFan said, there was a design change across the board between the 2003 and the 2004 model campers.

In the case of the T1950, they changed the GVWR from 5,000# to 5,500#. In doing this they did change the springs on the camper to align with the 5,500#

I am not sure about the wheel well size. They "may" have changed that. I am not sure.

As for the axle, odds are high there is the standard 3,500# axle tube but they derate it and put 2,750# springs on it. In the current day of axles with brakes, the 3,500# axle is the standard in this smaller class of axle. And rather this making so many different sizes, they just change the springs to meet the intended use. Yours may also have the 3,500# axle tube but it would have 2,500# springs. They can only rate the axle capacity by the weakest component.

If all goes well, I should have this T-1950 in less than a month. When I do, I can measure just about anything if you want or need.

Hope this helps

John

TY John. Reviewing as we have appt to move axles under springs and a few things to consider..at the least. My paperwork shows serial numbers for the 2000 Dexter 3500's but online search starts 2001 s/n. So I don't know the diameter for correct kit?

KIT for flip 3500 will fit no matter springs used?

EZ LUBE upgrade by Dexter would mean All new axles or just parts?

TIRES original sizing, still curious to know if wheel well sizing changed. Any markings on those wells to help answer this question between years with change 14 to 15?

Hi, I will try and help as I can.

The Dexter axle flip kit, this kit fits a 2 3/8" OD tube axle which is a 3,500# axle tube. As long as your axle tube is 2 3/8" OD it should work.

Scroll down to "K71-384-00: Over/Under Conversion Kit " Its the 11th item
Up to 7K This link is to the Dexter web site where they list the products

The springs do not matter, it is the tube OD that is needed for the over/under kit to work correctly. If you have 2,500# springs on a 3,500# axle, that is acceptable and done all the time. They use a larger axle tube as that is more available. Then down size the springs to the load that is carried.

Adding EZ lube. If your axle are not already drilled for the grease fitting in the end, it is difficult to upgrade the axle tube unless you have special tools to do this. If yours is drilled, then adding the grease fitting and grease cap is easy. I doubt yours is pre drilled though. If it was, it should of had the EZ lube grease caps on it already. Changing out the axle tubes is a way to do this upgrade. Expensive, but doable.

This is what the EZ lube axle spindle would look like. Grease fitting in the end and a cross drilled hole behind the inboard bearing.

The standard axle does not have that center and cross hole drilling. It is possible to drill the axle and add it, but this is not simple and if you mess up the drilling pending what happened you could damage it to not be usable at the bearing surfaces. I have done this when I had to, but I do not recommend trying it unless you have access to a machine shop to do it.

The wheel wells, did they change between the 2004 upgrade with 15" tires? I really do not know. But if you are considering upgrading your wheels and tires and want to know, measure your wheel wells on your 2000 camper and make a sketch and post. I can measure my T1950 and we can compare.

Hope this helps

John

Looks like John has everything covered. On the ez lube, many have it but choose not to use it (it was invented for boat trailers from what I was told). I have had grease bypass issues when using it even with good inner seals. Talking to customer service at dexter I was told to just pack normally and not use ez lube. That is what I’ve been doing, so it isn’t like you are missing anything great. Either way the service interval is 15 k, so you do need to pull them apart anyway.

I flipped axles years ago, but this year I bought straight axles to get rid of the drop axles. Drop axles flipped are the same clearance as straight axles not flipped within an inch. I would have saved switching axles to straight at the start.

Thank you Tod! Have had bearing buddy on boat trailer, know those are not recommended for TT. I think we hit the calendar service marks before the miles either way, w or w/o an ez lube lol.

We do have the drop axle currently. When you say within an inch is that up or down from the ground? How was the fit for your wheel well? You have 15's? we have 14's.

We changed TV to a Tahoe and lowered WD head max on current 9 1/2 shank(?) A 11" shank is $200 and of course we would still tow low to ground, unsure of the level because of the automatic leveling of the SUV. We drag the V's in our hilly yard..actually even the spare tire digs now. Would prefer to keep axles above springs, considered a change to springs but don't think that would be enough help.

We feel there are many years ahead for our loved Sunline. Appt next week so it's decision time. Multiple states to travel a few more weeks.

Regards, Terry

When I said that the drop axles flipped (drop axle overslung) and straight axles underslung were very close, I meant that in those two configurations the camper sits very similar as far as off the ground (so similar tongue heights). Flipping the drop axle with give a lot of clearance and help your dragging issues a lot. I went with straight axles because I don't like the drop axles for clearance, adjusting brakes, etc... but I'm picky.

We have 15 inch wheels and when we flipped we went to LTs and they are wider so a lot of things changed at once. We gained a lot of clearance in the wells. Love the LTs for what we do.

Appreciate the responses. Medical issues now hamper our servicing ourselves so we will keep these axles.

If the same guard fits all years of T1950 I would say the wheel well doesn't change. Hubby home Wed so we'll team up for measuring that for John.

Regards, Terry

Throughout the '90s and 2000s, Sunlines 24' and under had 14" wheels, the longer ones and small slide trailers had 15", and the large slide trailers had a wider 15".

I inquired with Sunline back in the day to see if I could run a 15" wheel on a trailer that originally had 14". They confirmed no problem. At least that was for a 1994.

Sunline standardized everything to 15" I believe in 2004, which is why Tod has 15".
