Slide Room Problem

I am looking for some ideas. The slide room on our new to us 5'th wheel will no longer deploy. The slide room motor runs but the slide does not deploy. I have searched the forum and saw the problem PTHutch had and fix and am thinking this be my possible problem. Is there anything else that could cause this problem. I now I won't know for sure what the problem is until I can get the underbelly off. but just looking for some possible ideas for the problem. Also is there any why I can test anything until I get the underbelly off.

I'm assuming you saw this post

http://www.sunlineclub.com/forums/ph...r=asc&start=15

Since yours is a 2003 I'm making a wild.... assumption yours is a Lippert slide system like mine. If you have what Hutch did, if you push the button all havoc is going to break loose under the camper..... Motor trying to turn but nohting holding it = not good. Makes a big nasty OMG sound.

What do you hear when you push the button? Anything? Try in and out.

The question is, is the motor running? You would hear it.

If the slide is jamed the motor "may" grunt when in or out is pushed. The clutch will not trip until you reach full out. It stalls out on the way in, clutch trips on the way out when full extend is reached and hard stop is reached inside the ACME screw drive.

The question is, does the motor even have power going to it? There is a kill switch, I think there is in yours, my 2004 has it but the kill switch went away in 2005 I think. If that is off then the normnal in and out will do nothing. Find it and make sure it is on. Mine is a large black rocker switch.

There is a circuit breaker on mine just for the slide. Yours "might" have a fuse. If fuse, is it blown?

Need more info on sounds or lack of sounds.

I would only use the hand crank as a last resort until we know more what does and does not work.

May have to break out the volt meter and see if power is on the in/out switch.

Good luck

John

PS. Did it ever work since you had it home?

If it is the kill switch, it's located right next to the slide switch.

Let me know if you need me to look for/try anything on ours for you.

Been in touch with Trailblazer on his B Berry. The motor runs but slide does not move. Posting/web limited right now.

I'm thinking it is this plastic gear from the sounds of it. However his may not be exaclty like mine. Here is mine.

It also looks like the slide actuator is on the REAR slide arm. I can see the stop can on the rear gear rack on his. Is yours on the rear arm or up front by the dump valve?

And does the belly cover, cover up the slide motor?

John

John, thanks for all of the great e-mails last night. Since the trailer is currently stored at my work I was able to take a quick look at it this morning. The slide motor is in fact at the rear of my slide and is not covered by the enclosed underbelly. I was able to see as the shear pins on the tubs where fine and in fact there is no bending on the brackets so I guess we can be safe in assuming either this unit was never cranked out manually or if it was not excess force was used. I have noticed the extension tube to the motor that would allow me to crank this unit in or out manually is missing along with the cotter pin that would hold it in place. I will therefore either have to buy one or make one of these.

I won't be able to do any work on it until after work tonight. At this point I am assuming I am going to have to get the motor off to work on it further. By the looks of the photos, it looks like it is only help on by one large screw/bolt into the bottom of the actuator tube and a second one through the top. Is this correct?

GOOD hunting. Well at least you know what it is not....

If your motor looks like mine, See pic

Then yes, there is 2 bolts (self taping screws) that hold the entire motor on the end of the ACME screw tube. One on the bottom and one on top. Take those 2 out and the whole things is in your hand. Bolt head size is 1/2” or 9/16 can’t remember exactly.

The small pipe on the end of the motor shaft to use the hand crank on. Yes mine was missing the roll pin. Was in there doing nothing. I saw it when I had the cover off mine 1 day. Must be a common problem the pin falling out then the tube goes where ever. I put a nut and bolt thru it and double nutted the bolt.

Good luck

John

I removed the slide motor from the trailer tonight and removed the cover plate. As you can see from the photo below it is definitely a broken gear in the motor.

I received the replacement gear pack from Lippert today. The gears have now been replaced in the motor and the motor has been reinstalled on the trailer. Everything is working again and the slide room both deploys and retracts again.

As a result of this issue, I now have a spare set of motor gears that I will be carrying in the trailer. I figure if this ever happens again and I am on the road, I can probably replace the gears in about the same amount of time it would take me to hand crank in the slide room.

I also want to offer up a big Thank you to John for all his help on this problem. If it were not for all the e-mails back and forth, I know I would have been much more frustrated with the process.

1st Off, Your Welcome. Glad to help anytime.

2nd off, due to your findings a spare gear set is not a bad idea. Taking a long vacation trip and having this tear out is bad enough, but I can fix on the road if I have the parts.

Also on your new one, is the clutch gear all metal? It seemed like your 2003 model was a combo of metal and plastic on the clutch gear. In 2004 my clutch gear is all metal. A little maybe unknown prior upgrade Lippert did that we just realized for prior to 2004 slide owners.

Yes, the clutch gear is now all metal. Definitely suspect it is an unknown upgrade done by Lippert.
