Single Axle Tire Dilemma
I'll start by saying that in most cases, I don't condone using non ST or LT tires on a trailer. But I feel this is a special case.
I will need to buy tires for the '79 soon. The ones on there are smaller than stock and lose all air in about a week. I've begun to look at options, and there aren't many for a 13".
The factory spec tire was B78-13, 4 ply, load range B, with a 1" whitewall. Yes, a whitewall tire was standard on a Sunline.
The modern radial equivalent is a 175/80R13. If looking to go ST, I have a number of radial and bias options from Carlisle, which I would likely do without a doubt if not for this next option.
I also found a Milestar MS775, which is available in that size with a 1" whitewall like the original:
Milestar specs:
Overall Diameter: 24"
Tread Depth: 10
Load Index: 86 (1168 lbs each, 2336 combined)
Max PSI: 44
Speed Rating (up to X mph): Up to 112 mph
Warranty: 40,000
Carlisle Radial Trail specs (bias Sport Trail has similar specs):
Overall Diameter: 24
Tread Depth: 8
Load Index: 91 (1356 lbs, 2712 combined)
Max PSI: 50
Speed Rating (up to X mph): Up to 81 mph
12 1/2' MC specs from brochure:
GAWR: 2100 lbs
Empty axle weight: 1050
So, both tires would give me capacity beyond the axle rating, and let's face it, there's only so much space to load up a 12' trailer. So I'm not worried about it ever coming close to that max weight.
Because this is a single axle trailer, there's no scrubbing involved, so having the stiffer sidewalls and trailer construction isn't as critical. There also isn't a chance of one being overloaded in a tandem setup due to blowout, curb climbing, etc. It does have brakes, but then again so do cars. Cost wise the two are about the same, so I'm leaning toward the whitewall because it'll look correct for it.
Thoughts?

Here is what I'm using on my T1700 https://simpletire.com/gladiator-st1...42001831-tires No lie I have a 6 speed stick in my Tacoma truck and I gained one gear higher on the same hills over the old tires. I too had issues with the tires losing air until I replaced the valve stems with bolt in metal stems park it in the off season at 50 psi check it in the spring 50 psi.

Hi Jon,
H'mm. I have "heard" there are some circumstances where P rated tires are allowed in trailer service but I'm not close enough to that know if it is folklore or accurate.
I myself would go with this Carlisle Radial Trail HD trailer tire on that little trailer. https://www.carlislebrandtires.com/o...adial-trail-hd
They offer a ST175/80R13 LR C tire. The weight listing is a little different then you listed, don't know which one you found, it is 1,360# @ 50 psi. The rim width and tire size aligns with the P tire you found as I do not know the rim width etc of the originals.
The Maxxis ST Radial M8008 is also listed in that size and I would not have an issue with them. https://www.maxxis.com/catalog/tire-...t-radial-m8008
I know you are after the most authentic looking tire, however tire sidewall wiggle of a P tire "might" be an issue. I have no good experience with P tires on a single axle trailer. For sure a no, no on tandem or triple axle and I know you know that too.
Your question is great one for Tireman9 on our forum. You may have to PM him and point him to this post as I did not know if he checks the forum regularly.
On the leaking air, odds are high the tire valve is shot or rim bead rust. Even the tire itself if it is old enough can leak. On older rims with some level of minor rust on the bead, bead sealer has been know to help. In your case, new tires and stems on a cleaned up rim may cure it all.
Curious what Tireman9's point of view on this would be.
Good post, as we have many others with single axle Sunlines.
Hope this helps
John

Hi John,
Thanks for your feedback. I'll reach out to Tireman9 and see what he says.
I should note that the trailer has P155/80R13 on it now, "Steel belted all season", with no clear brand name. The seller said his dad put them on because they were some old tires they had laying around, but he admitted they were smaller than stock. So they were used tires already and look pretty old. The trailer did wiggle a lot on the way home, all back roads up to 55, but I figured that was mostly due to the trailer being so short and angled back so much. If I were going to tow this again, I'd need a lower drop hitch.
The wheels look in OK shape, definitely a bit rusty but not terrible. I may see if I can borrow my dad's bead breaker to see if I can break the beads to inspect the bead area before going to have new tires mounted. Shouldn't be too hard with these small P tires. I'm going to bet the issue is with the valve or tire. I'd put the spare on, but it's an even older P tire in the correct size, so the trailer wouldn't sit level for putting it on jacks.

Hi All,
I heard back from Tireman9, and he made an important note- P rated tires, when used in a rare trailer application, need to be de-rated for trailer use. Specifically, the calculated load capacity of the tires be at least 115% of the scale weight on the tires.
That said, the real capacity of these particular P tires is 1015 lbs each, for a total of 2030 on both.
Tireman9 also mentioned because a restored trailer will likely not see thousands of miles like someone who uses their trailer all the time, there's less of a concern with using a P tire for this application.
With a GAWR of 2100 lbs, these tires are underrated for the application if the trailer is fully loaded. They would be sufficient correct replacement tires for a Sunspot.

An update to this situation. I have the old tires removed and wheels painted. Called the tire store to see about ordering the Milestar whitewalls. They said that tire isn't stocked in their warehouse, and they'll have to contact the manufacturer to find out if they could get them and how long. I haven't heard back yet.
If they can't get them or there's a huge price increase, I may be going ST after all.
