Wonderful news. So glad your Sunline will be good as new soon. Also glad to hear that the origin of the leak was finally located. Thanks for the update and pictures.

1st off thank you for sharing the pics. We gain good knowledge of how these things are built from the inside out.

And I might add the place doing the job is doing it very well. I can see they are taking care to make “the fix” a clean one so it fits like it is suppose to.

Since you found the leaking culprit, if there is any evidence left… can you hone in on what went wrong? Was it just purely a split in the putty tape or what? We can learn from your misfortune to know better what to look out for.

Thanks again and keep us posted.

John

By the looks of the job they are doing your camper will be good as new, glad it was not as bad as you thought it was.I'm too curious did the door leak where it attaches or did the door seal leak,I'm assuming from your previous post that it was at the seal.

Source of leak

Rich,

Yes, it appears that the point of entry was at the storage door frame. Speculation is that the vandalism broke the seal of the frame and allowed water to flow in the rather large grooves of the siding. The fellow doing the repair stated that siding was not flattened out enough. This required large amounts of caulking to seal the resulting gap produced by these grooves. We also noticed after removing the linoleum flooring a stencil with "This Side Down" on the structurewood subfloor...hmmmmm.

A new door/frame assembly was ordered to replace the damaged unit, however, we are now faced with the issue of re-stripping the storage door. Jon suggested to me to switch doors, but that is not an option as the door is damaged. I am waiting to hear from an RV striping company to see if they can duplicate the colors, however, even if they can it looks like it will cost me close to $200 for a 24" door....not going to happen.

Anyone have any suggestions for a decal that would fill the gap and be in synch with the color scheme????

David

Morning David,

When I had the '87 T-1660, it had the textured entry door, which the striping was peeling off of so badly. I worked and scrubbed and scraped until I got all of the tape striping off that darn door. I had a couple of small pieces (maybe the size of a quarter or little bigger). I taped those pieces to a sheet of paper so I wouldn't loose them, and off to the auto store I went. I was able to purchase those small cans of Dupli-color touch up paint. They matched so good it WAS unbelievable. I used good masking tape (remember the door was textured), and kept running my fingers over it to make sure all the nooks and crannies were taped. Then I sprayed on the colors. When it was dry, and I slowly and carefully peeled off the take, it was like "WOW" this looks great. The matchup was almost perfect. If I didn't tell anyone it was not original, no-one would would ever know.

SO, since you have your original door, I'd be going to places that carry auto touch up paint, and I'll bet you can find something that will match. Then just tape and paint your stripes to match the existing ones.

Here is a pic of the 1660 during the paint scraping process:

GOOD LUCK !!!

door Striping

Hi Kitty...THX for the suggestion. Sounds like a cost effective alternative to me and there is a auto supply store just down the street from the RV repair shop. So far, replacing the stripes with tape will cost $80+ and I am not sure that the colors will be exact. Jon suggested switching out the doors, but I am not sure if the old door is damaged and/or compromised.....the door frame is bent, though. The contact at the striping company suggested that I wait to see how the new door looks blank as it is the only door that has striping & may not look all that bad even though the striping will be interupted.

Re: door Striping

Woodstock,

The guy at the stripping company has a good suggestion. See what the blank door looks like first. If it doesn't look good, than you can always do Kitty's suggestion.

Here's a picture of the side of our trailer. Notice that the Refrigerator cover interrupts the strips, plus the storage door interrupts the lower portion of the strips. This may give you an idea what to expect once the new blank door is installed.

Hope this was of some help.
Hutch

to stripe or not to stripe

Hi Hutch,

THX for the comments and pic.....the fridge and heater on my coach also break the continuity of the stripes (see 2nd pic of recent submission) so it actually may look "original" to a first time onlooker. We shall see.....hopefully by the end of February.

Now that I think about it, I agree, you may find it'll look just fine without striping. After all, the S Series' didn't have any striping on the entry doors, so it'll look like a cross between them.

Hi Rich....not yet, but soon. The flooring was a special order and it has been delayed twice for reasons unknown. I believe that it came in on Friday so we are nearing completion. They have reinstalled all of the storage doors, replaced the sub-flooring and recaulked the whole trailer. The caulking job that they did was superb....very pleased with their skills and attention to detail. I know that the owner (Mark) has brought the trailer back inside to bring it up to temperature to install the flooring so I am expecting a call some time this week. I had asked him to give me a call when the floor is about 1/2 done for a photo opp. I will post again as soon as I have news & pics.

Floor Repair Completed

Hi All,

Well, after all this time our T2299 is finally close to coming home with all repairs completed to my satisfaction and ready to start the season. It has been a long and sometimes very frustrating experience, but now our second home is sound and ready to go. I have a couple of pics to post & will forward them to Jon to put with the others so the complete project can be viewed.

David

PS For anyone in the CT area that is in need of an excellent RV repair facility give Freedom RV in Chaplin, CT a call.....hope this plug is OK!
