Mysterious Water in my Fresh Water Holding Tank

This is weird. I am full-timing in one spot, hooked up to a regular pressurized water supply, I have a pressure regulator in place. When I first parked 2 months ago, there was a visible 1/2 inch of water in the fresh water holding tank under the bed. Now as of this weekend, there is now magically almost a 1/2 a tank of water in the tank!

The fill cap door is locked and secure. What the heck happened? There must be some sort of overflow? We had a bunch of rain a few days ago... is there some sort of weird rain-water collection I don't know about??

How could the water get in there? I thought the fresh water tank was a completely separate system from the city water fill.??

Gross thought... I had the grey water latch closed so I could flush the black water tank. Can the grey water back up into the fresh water tank if the grey water goes too high?

Check valve in the water pump. There are two valves in the water system one keeps the water from running out the city water port when the pump is running and the other one in the pump keeps the city water from filling your fresh water tank.

Yep, water pump check valve leak.

Yup, gross thought but the previous 2 posts nailed it.

When the grey tank gets full it will back up into the shower drain and into the tub.

Ok, so my grey waste water won't ever back up into the fresh water tank, right? At least not without showing in the shower first, correct? I don't think the grey ever came close to backing up into the shower, I just could not figure how water magically filled the fresh water tank. So, other than having some city water leak into the fresh water tank from the hose connection via the pump check valve, there are no issues other than I may need to run from the pump if the water level gets too high, correct?

Question: Do I need to shut off the city water to clear the water from my tank by using the pump or does the water supply automatically switch to the fresh water tank when I turn the pump on?

Thanks!!

No, there is no physcal (pipe) connection to the grey tank. The water has to go into an open recepticle, the sinks or shower, before it drains to the grey tank.

The punp will only pickup water from the fresh water tank.

The pump will have to pump higher pressure than the city pressure to put water into the system.

The temporary fix is to turn off the city water, use the pump to bring the tank level down, then go back to city.

Mack is right about the pump not working with city water on. You should not have to empty the fresh water tank by pumping it out. You should have a drain line under the trailer for the tank. Look under the trailer in the area of the tank. Open the valve and drain the tank. Then leave it open until you can replace the pump.

Just open the fresh tank drain and no the gray water can not get into the fresh water tank.

If you do not have a water pressure regulator on your city water line it maybe why the pump check valve is letting water into the fresh tank. It a pretty simple system of valve and springs if the pressure is too high it can let water past the valves.

Thanks again for the info! For the record, I do have a pressure regulator in line with the incoming hose. Either it is a leaky valve or maybe I need a better pressure regulator. I do see a little drain nozzle on the outside of the trailer? I will give it a try.

I would recommend using your pump for awhile with the water in the tank to flush the toilet etc. Then hook your city water back up, after awhile that may wash any thing that maybe holding the valve open out. If that fails just leave the drain open.
