Lug Nut Caps on Wheels; How do you remove them?
I'm moving on to the next stage in the repairs of my 1987 T-1661. I'm currently installing the brake controller and the next step is going to be to test the brakes.
In order to inspect and test the brakes I need to remove the old wheels ( I have new ones and new tires to replace them, because they're dryrotted) and I noticed that there are "Lug Nut Caps" over the lug nuts.
How do I remove these without stripping them, breaking them etc?
Do they just come off like regular lug nuts? Do I pull/pry them off? Do they unscrew clockwise or counter-clockwise like a regular nut?
Any inmput is very appreciated!
Thanks everyone!
David

Can you post a pic? I'm not sure what style you have, they had quite a few through the years.
If it's just a lug nut cover, it probably just pulls of with your fingers. Grab it and tug.
The center cap is probalby held in with ears behind the wheel, so it'll only come off when you pull the wheel off first.

To get the lug nut covers off, use a pair of pump pliers, open the jaws up to the right nut size, put just a little pressure on the pliers and wiggle and pull the covers off. If you want you can put some black tape on the jaws or a rag. They also make a tool to do the same thing. Chuck

Yup, these are them, if you don't want to just grab them and pull them off. As they bake in the sun over time, they get much easier to pull off...

Is there another name for these plyers? I tryed googling 'Pump Plyers' and the only thing that comes up are channel locks. I have channel locks, pipe wrenches, even vice grips and clamps. I don't have these yet! They look like a good addition for my tool box! LOL!

Universal Lug Nut Cover Pliers - Wheel Masters 8211 - Wheel Covers - Camping World
They're called lug nut pliers.
I quickly googled them and CW seems to be the cheapest of most of the known online RV retailers with the sale right now.

I did some further reading on the internet about these darn lug nut cap covers, while they're nicer looking than the lug nuts themselves, they sure are a pain in the but.
Anyhow, I read that a guy used some channel locks and nipped the round end of the cap with them and pulled them off. Another guy used a set of needled nose vice grips and got them off. I've tried everythig so far, the vice grips, the channel locks, a pry bar...yelling at them, praying about them...asking them nicely to come off...
Now I'm on my way to get some penetrating oil and those fancy plyers they designed to get them off there.
Wish me luck.

Dave, I just looked at your pics, and as best as I can tell (the pics are further away from the wheel, not right on it), I'm not sure you have lug nut covers. Especially if you are struggling so much.
I don't know for sure, but I think those pliers are more designed for removing the chrome wheel simulators on motorhomes. Some are just pushed on, but some are actually held on with two fake lugnuts. So rather than risk scratching one up with a socket/wrench, they have these pliers to I guess twist them off. But, they will absolutely work for pulling off the little black Sunline lug nut covers.
That being said, your lug nuts just look like chrome, capped nuts. If you put a socket on there and it's either 3/4 or 13/16, then that probably is the nut itself. My '86 1550 was like that, though I'm not sure if that was the factory setup or not. The center cap on that looked a little different than yours, but it had a big collar on the back that went around all the lug nuts so the wheel really held it on.
I have some spare lug nut covers for '90s Sunlines and I just measured one. Inside dim is 13/16" for the lugnut, even though the cover is more like .815". On the outside of the cover (where you'd put a socket) is .958", so it's a big size and not really a common size for sockets. It's about 1.1" deep.
So I suspect you just have chrome lugnuts on there that don't have covers. Unless the nut is almost 1" across, you probably don't have covers.

Jon, thank you so much for the extensive help you've been giving me on everything. I really do appreciate it!
The caps on one wheel are off now and I actually got two of the lug nuts to come off as well. Those caps are nice for adding feature to the wheels but my goodness, what a pain.
Next step, I have to find a socket / lug wrench that fits the lugs because the standard one that my wife got with her Honda Civic doesn't fit. I haven't tried the one that came with the Escape yet, but that's next. Heck, I'm just happy to see the caps coming off.
Once I get these wheels off I have to pull the drums out to inspect the brakes and see what kind of wear and tear we have in there. I'm also going to take the advice of the RV dealer and repack / grease the bearings on the wheels. If it needs brakes, that will be the next step.
But anyhow, thanks to you and the rest of the help on here, the caps and lug nuts are coming off now and it made me very happy to make just this little bit of progress.

Glad you could get it apart, Dave! A lot of people get a cross wrench to keep in the trailer.
