Unhappy Locked Out

Finished cleaning up breakfast on the last day of camp.... put the last of the eggs on the kitchen table and took a walk to enjoy the first of autumn's golden leaves falling gently to the ground.

I don't normally lock my door, so it was a surprise to me to return and find the door unopenable, the key turning in the lock but useless.

I am somehow locked out of my little camper.... I can see the rest of the eggs smirking at me through the window.

There is no other door and there is no way to get in through a window.

Any suggestions??

Yeh... we had this happen to us this summer. The main door lock set some how was goofed up and no matter what I did, the key cylinder would not turn. It was like a tumbler jumped out of place some how.

Lucky for us, we have a bed room door. So I went in and then had a heck of a time trying to unscrew the screws inside to get the lock set apart with the screen door in the way. After fiddling enough I did get the entire lock set out in the open on the picnic table and it took a good long time with lube squirted in etc to get the tumblers to start working. On our lock this was the dead bolt unit.

Since you only have 1 door, short of breaking something maybe 2 suggestions.

1. Call a lock smith who may be able to pick the lock.

2. Last resort, unscrew the entire door flange. Yes all those screws under the vinyl strip if yours has one and the entire door, frame may be able to come out. The threshold may give you a bit of an issue, but you should be able to get past it.

Just so you know what this involves see here. The lock smith may be the easier way.

Good luck

John

PS I do not recall very many, locked out posts yet. If time is on your side... I'm sure it is not, you may be able to order a new key

Thanks John - you gave me a few ideas to try, anyway. I do know a locksmith who may be able to help. Time would be on my side, at least until camping season starts again, if it weren't for those eggs I left on the table!

Assuming this is the handle lock and not the deadbolt component, call an RV dealer. They have master keys for these locksets for the handle lock only and can unlock them, assuming it isn't jammed.

Good suggestion... this is a possibility. It certainly won't be me crawling thru there, but I do have a rather "narrow" son who might be up for the task!

Well thanks to all with some very good tips for future lockouts. I never would have expected this to happen, but... when I shut the door, apparently the plastic bug guard insert on the screen door slid all the way over and got jammed up against the part of the lock you twist and held it in the up and down position. The door essentially locked itself and there was no way that lock was going to turn with that plastic piece tight up against it. Luckily Jim 44646 had the right idea.... my son was able to crawl through the cargo area and up through. It was a very funny thing to watch thru the window, but I do not recommend locking yourself out for amusement's sake. Thanks again, everybody!

Kim how "little" is your son?

Glad he was able to fit into the crawl space and save the day!

Kathy... my "little" one is a 24 year old who stands about 5'11". Thankfully, he is quite slender and wriggled himself in there with little problem (with the promise of an apple pie in his near future!"). He really did save the day! (He was pretty proud of himself that he was able to help mom, and he will continue to remind me of that day for some time to come!)

Or at least until that apple pie is made and eaten!

I have a set of keys for every thing hidden inside one of my compartments on a small hook that can't be seen (I'm not telling what one!) including the truck. I never saw any sense in locking the compartments seems like the odds are in favor of the crooks as you can unlock them if the key even remotely looks like it will fit.

I will attest, prepared food is definitely a motivating factor to most 24 year olds...

How about locking yourself IN ! Recently experienced this while camping...A friend came to visit and closed the door when she left. I realized I needed to give her something, tried to open the door and the handle fell down between the screen door and the door! There is a very small pin that holds the handle assembly together--it had slipped down and out causing the handle to fall apart! Thank heavens she was still onsite and rescued me as it DID work from the outside. There was no way for me to even retrieve it due to the screen door. I have a temporary fix right now awaiting more permanent measures to be taken.
