Lighted red toggle switch

Need a red lighted toggle switch for my electric water heater element switch on the panel. Switch works, but indicator light doesn't. Can't seem to find exact replacement online. Part # is R13-66 T85. It's DC switch with a 24V label on it. Anybody have one laying around? I'll pay for shipping.

Jim,

Is there a manufacture name on the side of the switch? Or take a pic and post. Need more info on what it is. With more info we may be able to track one down.

I have 2 leeds for you.

1. Call KIB direct and ask them where to buy a switch. They made the tank panel. They are still going strong HOME | KIB Electronics

If you strike out at KIB, then trying to match up the switch is option 2

2. I am trying to see is I can match up the switch and not having a lot of luck but getting close to an alternative. Need more info off the switch as I am fairly sure KIB did not make the switch. They bought it from someone and integrated it. Back when I was doing TTL logic control stuff... Newark Electronics was a big go to place for this kind of stuff. So I searched them, problem is the illuminated light is 125 VAC and not 12 VDC but the color and the I & O is printed on them. So skip this one wrong light voltage. R5BBLKREDFF1 - E-SWITCH - Rocker Switch, Illuminated, DPST

But did find this 12 VDC one, an NTE Electronics brand switch no. 54-083 The voltage on the light is correct just it is only a 10 amp switch. Which is plenty to run the water heater electric element relay but ideally it is 15 amp or more as the fuse I think in the converter is 15 amp that feeds the tank panel. If you had to you could but a 10 amp fuse in the line feeding the switch. Again back to need more info off the orig switch as it should have a voltage and amp rating.
Item number 54-083

Here is a cut sheet with dimensions too verify it will fit in your cut out.
https://www.nteinc.com/switches/pdf/rocker-illum.pdf

And Newark sells them too
54-083 - NTE ELECTRONICS - Rocker Switch, Illuminated, SPST

If you go the NTE route, you can buy from either, I have only dealt with Newark before.

And for the heck of it, I did a hit on Amazon on the NTE part number. A little most cost but free prime shipping sold by Amazon themselves.
https://www.amazon.com/NTE-Electroni...NCAN+LAMP+.250

Hope this helps. Let us know how this comes out as this is the first I recall someone trying to get this lighted switch. We need a source for it.

Thanks

John

John, after entering multiple variously worded search queries, I also came up with a KIB lighted water pump switch. There a several vendors on EBay. Prices and shipping varied. I ordered 2 at $20 each with free shipping. I will update when received and installed. I can't make out the manufacturer on the original switch. It is some kind of symbol. I will try and take some pics and post them from the computer. Is there an easy way to post pics directly from the phone?

It figures. As soon as I went to Amazon on the PC, I found the KIB switch with the same markings as my original. Slightly less money and free 2 day shipping. So I ordered that one too! I can always send the other one back.

Hi Jim

Can you post a link of the one you bought on Amazon?

Amazing what Amazon is selling now a days. And to think they started out only selling books...

A R13-66 is a very common switch .83"X.59" even a hardware store might have one lighted, unlighted I would recommend one with an LED, the bulb types light don't last real long.

Got it. Thanks

The switch is rated 16 amps at 12 volts. Good.

Okay. I replaced the red rocker switch for my HW element. It now lights up. However, it lights up whether the 120V breaker is on or off. I can't remember if this is the normal operation. I know the breaker needs to be on for the element to work. Does the rocker just indicate that the element mode is selected? If the breaker is on, but the rocker is off, then the element is off also?

Breaker on, switch lit= HW
Breaker on, switch off= No HW
Breaker off, switch lit=No HW
Breaker off, switch off= No HW

Does that sound correct? Now that I think about it, it sounds correct.

Hi Jim,

The circuit breaker "only" turns the 120 VAC power source for the water heater on or off at the source. Meaning the 120 VAC source that actually runs the element. There is no feedback between the breaker and the red rocker switch in the tank panel.

The red rocker switch is part of the 12 volt DC control circuit. The control circuit turns on a relay (high power switch) on the back of the water heater that then allows the 120 VAC power to connect to the electric element. The red rocker switch red light has no feedback to tell you that the electric element is actually on, only that you flipped the rocker switch on and it "should" be running on the 120 AC element.

If you have the breaker off, and the red rocker on, the red light will light, the relay will energize but nothing happens as the 120 VAC source is not on.

Your chart of what is on and off is correct.

You got it right.

Hope this helps

John
