Is there moisture getting in the wall?

Hi there,

I did some remodel inside the camper last year, replacing some wood where there was rot. i painted over the wood and in some places there are still staples from the original wood. i noticed the other day that in one area a couple of the staples were rusty on the inside wall. and it was in an area that had some damage.

does this mean for sure that moisture is still getting inbetween the walls? it's dry inside. no obvious leaks, but it could be in between the outside aluminum and wood walls. could it just be moisture from the heat and showers inside?

it's hard for me to tell definitively because the walls are still pretty cold to the touch. the cushion is not damaged at all though. i hate to think that it would need to be repaired again...

thanks for any thoughts. noralee

Moisture is a problem in the winter time when you live in a camper. The rusty staples I would not worry about you'll probably find them every where. The gas range produces tons of moisture showers and things like that just add to it. It's hard to vent when it's cold out it does not take long to cool off with the vents open but that maybe your only choice I some times camp in pretty cool weather and end up running the vent fan a lot it's a small space and gets wet pretty fast inside.

the one thing that was confusing was that those are the only rusty staples i've seen. i left a tissue against the wall in that corner over night when it rained and it was damp when i checked it in the am. do you think there would be enough moisture inside to do that?

I think so the humidity inside a lived in camper in the winter is very high. People breathing gas stove going makes a lot of moisture. There is no effort to rust proof the staples, every one I have removed during my up grade is rusty.

We winter camp in our unit and inside mosture is something that has to be dealt with.

There are 2 basic ways,

Vent, let it go out through the roof vent or a cracked open window. And the opening is bigger then one thinks just from 2 people sleeping overnight. On ours the roof vent has to be a full 1" to 1.5" open to slow it down.

Dehumidify. You find a dehumidifer with the sound you can live with and is big enough for the space.

We now do both. If you do neither the walls and everything else is mositure covered when it gets really bad.

That said, keep an eye on the spot. When the weather gets better, try the tissue trick again. That was a good idea.
