Interesting Tire Info including speed ratings:

Good info on trailer tires here
http://www.discounttire.com/dtcs/inf...rTireFacts.dos
An interesting quote
"All "ST" tires have a maximum speed rating of 65 mph."

A PDF from Carlisle is where I got the quote below:
http://www.carlisletire.com/product_...ire_poster.pdf
"High speed towing in hot conditions degrades Trailer Tires significantly. As heat builds up during driving, the tire's internal structure starts to breakdown, compromising the strength of the tire. It is recommended to not exceed 60 Miles per hour (MPH) while towing a trailer."

And another from Goodyear Marathon:
http://www.goodyear.com/rv/pdf/marat...nfo_032806.pdf

"Industry standards dictate that tires with the ST designation are speed restricted to 65 MPH under normal inflation and load conditions unless a different speed restriction is indicated on the sidewall of the tire."

" Based on industry standards, if tires with the ST designation are used at speeds between 66 and 75 mph, it is necessary to increase the cold inflation pressures by 10 psi above the recommended pressure for the load.
* Do not exceed the maximum pressure for the wheel.
* If the maximum pressure for the wheel prohibits the increase of air pressure, then the maximum speed must be restricted to 65 mph.
* The cold inflation pressure must not exceed 10 psi beyond the inflation specified for the maximum load of the tire."

Mark,

Good information, added your links to the Tires section of our OEM & Info Links topic within the Sunline Community Forum.

Thanks for posting.

I never knew thisand when I read it in another forum, I was shocked.

I guess when you travel at higher elevations, you need to adjust your pressure for the elevations? One guy said that when he was in the Mountains, around 8,000 to 10,000 feet, he had to put much less pressure in his tires. Then when he drove back down to sea level, they almost looked flat.

Does anyone know if this is true or not. Cindy and I are headed out West this fall, and I'd like to know if this is something I need to pay attention to?

Thanks
Pat

Hey Pat,

If you have a copy of June’s Trailer Life, the RV Clinic & Performance article (on page 104) talks about this specific issue.

In short, they say it’s more of a long term condition. That is if you plan to be at a different altitude (higher or lower) for a long period of time, then you should adjust the air pressure in your tires. For the short, multiple week trip, it’s not that big of a deal.

A few years ago we spent a few weeks out west in the mountains and I never adjusted the tire pressure. Though I did monitored the tire pressure regularly to make sure there wasn’t any drastic deviations.

Speaking of Trailer Life, does anyone else keep their old issues? My mom thinks I'm crazy, but I still have every issue back to 2003, and others such as MotorHome back to 2002. I still keep kicking myself for not keeping the issues of TL back to '97.
