hugging the porcelain bowl (well plastic anyway)

I am back and having flashbacks of college days gone long ago.

I hooked up the hose to the camper to fill up the tank and spang (not sure if that is a word but you may have typed it here in the past too) a bad leak back behind the commode where a human being was not intended to see or be seen.

The fitting was a little loose, even for plastic, so I tightened up a bit, crossed my fingers and had the wife winch me back to an upright position.

And you are right, it didn't help.

I got a mirror and a screwdriver and found 2 brass screws, both looked snug- hard to get loose when I decided to take it off.

I dropped the plastic (valve?) with an O ring.
At first I thought there were 2 O rings but the top one would not come off and looked more like it was attached so I left it alone.

the large O ring was a little hard but not deformed or brittle. I have some experience with water lines and O rings but it looks like it "might" be the problem.

All that history to ask another question.

Is there something else to do other than replacing the O ring?
Since I am down there already, should I replace the plastic valve?

Thanks in advance.

From,

Tim stuck in a tight spot!

Hi Tim

Well your story is for sure entertaining…… I had a similar could not shut off the water fast enough in the bath too. Was using a wand down the commode to flush out the tank before I had my tank sprayers in on this new camper. Well the darn plastic shut off knob broke off…. All I could do is try to capture the 1/4" solid stream of water flying all over as I yelled to the DW, shut it off, shut it off….

Your pic…. Well I see you do not have the monster size now…. It looks like you picked the thumbnail photo… So I traced to your photo bucket and picked the larger size one so I can see better. Just hover over the pic and when the menu pops up, copy the IMG command in photo bucket and then paste it in here. Your uploaded size is good.

OK well after all that…. I myself so not have that type of toilet. But O rings make these plastic things work or not… my 2 cents, if you can find new ones, get em. If the darn thing lets go in the middle of the night you will need yet another chiropractic adjustment.

Good luck

John

I have the plastic Thetford thunder mug in my '99.

The easiest way to actually do the repair is to:
a. clean it real well.
b. disconnect the water line
c. remove the two screws, one on each side at the base
d. lift up said thunder mug and remove to outdoors where you can work on it in relative comfort

I have an adapter that coincidentally fits the PEX compression fitting and allows me to hook it to a garden hose for testing.

If you have discovered a leak in the water section of the toilet on first use in the spring time, it may be because the trailer was inadequately winterized and not enough antifreeze was pumped into the toilet valve. (I learned this lesson the hard way when I first owned a TT back in the late 1970's.) The little plastic valve in the toilet is easily destroyed by expansion of freezing water.

Since you just got the trailer, Tim, there is a very good thread on winterizing here in Repairs and Maintenance so you will be prepared in the fall.

A big thanks!

Steve,

I looked the o ring last night after posting and just didn't see any reason it would not work other than it being snuged up tight enough. I was a little old but not compressed or brittle.

I think you must be right. I was professionally winterized but what you said makes the most sense.

Did you make a garden hose fitting for this or did you buy somewhere?
sounds like a smart idea as I am doing good these days to tie my shoes much less wrap myself around the commode.

I picked up a copper fitting at Home Depot that matches the compression fittin (1/2" NPT I think) and a male garden hose fitting and soldered them together. Most places like Home Depot have an area in the plumbing section with all those little bits and pieces.

Hey Steve,

Thanks for the tip, I can make one of those and probably well worth it.
You gave good advice, found a valve at camper store near work.

Got a funny look when he asked me what I had taken off. He wasn't familar with "thunder mug" either. I guess they are still laughing at me.
(Yeah, I really didn't know"!)

The important part is that I got it back together and the camper is leak free.

Now if the wife can just get me house broken, the world will be perfect.
