Help with sealant for roof penetrations

I discovered this weekend while cleaning the roof on our Sunline that the shroud hood for the antenna roof penetration has come loose and is not sealed, thus opening the penetration to leaking.

I want to make sure that I use the right sealant to close this back up and I'm not 100% sure what sealant to use on the rubber roof. Can anybody point me in the right direction?

Thanks,
Tom

Hi Tom,

Dicor #501 Self-leveling Lap Sealant, available at most RV dealers.

I actually went with the Dicor #551 since I wanted it to stack up around the antenna shroud for the penetration and the label indicated that non-self leveling is a better way to go for that.

I haven't done this repair yet, but I expect to get to it at one of the campgrounds in the next couple of days. I'll update this post and add some pictures once thats sorted.

Thanks for the help.

Just wanted to update a couple of threads and close them out. I did the reseal on the weather hood for the antenna cable and it turned out all good. I have not tested it with water since I don't think I would be able to immediately tell if the hood was leaking. I layered the sealant on both before I slid the hood down and around the top and base of the hood so I am pretty confident it is finished.

Like I said previously I went with a non-leveling sealant so it would hold to the somewhat vertical position I needed it to on the weather hood.

Two things I noted when doing this.

1 - It would be so nice if you could get small tubes of Dicor. I had to by a whole tube for probably 1.5 oz of material I needed, and I doubt it will save and work for the next time I need it.

2 - Dicor is STICKY. I had a hard time getting a nice smooth finish on it with my finger as it would just stick to my finger and then peak up when I tried to smooth it, anybody have any tricks for smoothing it out?

Keep your finger wet with water while you smooth it.

Works not only with Dicor but most any caulking material.
(I caulked a whole log house that way.... )

Neat tip. Did not know that.

Now the whole log house....I'll bet there is a campfire story in there somewhere

Although I have not tried this myself yet, I have been told the best way to smooth out the dicor without it sticking to your finger is to put some Goo Gone on the tip of your finger. This apparently prevents the Dicor from sticking to your finger while allowing you to get a nice smooth finish on the Dicor.

Last week I had to change the coax cable on our antenna as it had split. When I replaced the coax cable I found the new boot very loose after I fitting it over the antenna base opening. What I did was first place some dicor into the hole the cable passes through then placed the boot over top and used strips of Eteranbond cut in such a way so they would attach to the boot and holding it to the antenna base. This worked quite well and seems to keep the boot securely in place. I was lucky enough in that mind did not leak. Just glad I found this before I had a problem.

I would strongly suggest everyone check out the boot on their antenna and keep a close eye on it. As the OP stated, if this boot comes off and there is no dicor in the opening, this is a direct path for water to the inside of the coach.

I second that. Mine had the same issue but I caught it before a leak. There was not much caulk under the boot where the cable goes thru the metal housing to the inside. When we got the camper, used, I checked it and Dicor'ed it up and slide the boot down. Now this year I see the boot keeps lifting up off the metal fitting. While I have dicor under the boot I added a small stainless steel hose clamp to keep the boot stuck down. If seems when the antenna goes up and down as the wire gets older and stiffer, the boot lifts up verses flexing.
