"evacuate the traps" means when the tank is emptied and if the vent(s) are blocked the liquid leaving the tank will create a negative air pressure that will that will suck the water out of the sink traps while it pulls air into the tank. ... think of turning a big water bottle upside down, air has to go in to let the water out.
The vent on the roof is not threaded. That was a referance to the air break vent under (or near) the sink that was shown in the photos. That vent is intended to let air into the tank as it empties but then closes so air and odors don't go from the tank into the coach. It is a "one way" air valve but sometimes they fail and stay open.

climb up on roof and remove vent cover cap. stick a hose down exposed pipe. open gray water dump valve. turn on hose if water comes out the dump valve then your stack is clear. if not it's plugged most likely water will flush out clog if there is one. then replace vent cover.

When I got my T-1550 I was not sure how the previous owner took care of the tanks. So, I purhased Happy Camper Extreme Cleaner and followed the instructions with the exception I dumped a bag of ice chips into the tank too and took the camper for a 30 mile drive. It worked great.

hello,
I tested out the vents and they were clear. We removed the caps, painted them and re-attached them, so it looks much better, and now I have the peace of mind that they are in good working order.
I guess I need to do a better job cleaning out the tank from PO, and maintaining them with a fresh start.
Thanks all for your advice and suggestions. the video made it easy and worry free!

I have a problem with sludge in my grey water tank. Our favorite campground has grey water drain only at the site and they require us to use an adapter and garden hose to drain it. Mine clogs religiously with sludge from the tank. Its very frustrating. Anyone know what the best product is for this?

This product works well for this. Mix it up in a small container with water first, then pour down the sink or shower drain. It will live and eat on your sludge. I use the normal product. They do make and "extreme cleaner" which takes out real heavy stuff built up over time, you use it only to clean up and use the standard to maintain.
Happy Camper - Odorless Holding Tank Treatment Black and Grey Water
Sea Zyme also works well. Same thing, mix it up in a small container with water first, then pour down the sink or shower drain. It will live and eat on your sludge. I use to buy the Sea- Zyme and it works good too, just I bought it from a different marine place. This was the 1st hit on the web I found it at. Never bought from them so do not know. Seems Sea Zyme is big on the marine market.
Sea-Zyme Solid Waste Treatment - Toilet Paper & Chemicals - Toilets - Plumbing & Sanitation - Downwind Marine
I have use both in the house to clear out slow running sink drains. Worsk well and does not eat the pipes up like the heavy acid type of drain cleaners.
Hope this helps
John

Although it is normal for your grey tank to develop an odor, it is not normal to have that odor anywhere in the camper. As long as there is water in your drain traps, you should not smell that stink. I have never used grey tank deodorizer. There is something else going on.
Perhaps a pipe junction near that cabinet that stinks has a small enough leak to not leak water but does allow gas to emit slowly?

Hi OhhWell,
Was this towards Noralee or Jpspaz?
Agree Noralee has a leak of some kind up into the camper. In Jpspaz's case it was slow draining sludge reported not odor in the camper.

hmmm...how can i test for a small enough crack to emit gas but no liquid in the piping? besides just looking obviously, it sounds like it could not be visible to the naked eye. also some of the piping i can't get to...how do you deal with that without picking off the walls!? it sounds like that could be a possible problem since there are specific areas near the piping where the scent is.

Any Sunline I have owned or was acquainted with, has had a grey tank problem with fully draining due to not enough pitch in the tank..try to tilt your camper toward the drain side..I just did mine for a smell problem and lots of smelly slimy residue came out...yukky.! Now I will fill that tank again and put some borax (Boraxo detergent additive and some Clorox.) in and flush it again after awhile. Always add a gallon or two of clean water to your tanks after dumping as a dry tank will smell..mine smelled like bad eggs or sulphur every time I ran water in a sink. Janalee

To check for crack remove vent pipe cap and shine strong light down pipe while someone looks for (light leakage) in cabinets..of course this is a night job.I have only heard of this working. Janalee

Hi Noralee,
I take it you are still dealing with the stink... Sorry this has taken so long.
A page back WASA was talking about the vent unit near the sink drain. I did not see that you checked that out.
If that vent system is stuck open, the tank odor can come back up in the camper. You will have no leak of water but stink still comes through. The vent is under the sink, looks like a short stack pipe with the height above the trap. On top of the pipe is a round larger than the pipe fitting. Odds may be high the one you have may not be repairable. You may need a mirror and flash light to even see the top of it that might be sealed up other than some vent holes.
I do not know what your looks like being an older unit. If you can take some pics of the pipes under the sink and post we can see what you have and better suggest how to deal with it. If the vent is the issue, they can be cut off and new one added. I have bought them at the lumber yard as they do use them in the house under certain conditions.
Hope this helps
John
PS here is a web hit on some random campers pics of what they look like. Some one here on the SOC had a pic of theirs, cannot recall who. Gene maybe?
They look like this. This is the 1st one I could find quick
1 1 2" MPT Automatic Anti Siphon Trap Vent Venting Sinks Lavatories Tubs | eBay
With some digging I know there are more of them

Good memory John, I posted 2 pictures as attachments in post #6 of this thread. The pictures were under my kitchen sink. Not sure if they will show up here since attachments do not have a jpg extension.

here is a picture of the under the sink vent. we were wondering if there was a way to tell if it was open or closed based on the white gadget inside the valve.

That looks closed to me as well. You can't tell 100% from a picture though. Also, the rubber seal could be bad. There's just so many could-be's for your smell problem...
Someone suggested shinning a light in the pipes at night for cracks and that may work well but not on all the plumbing. It's not like you can pressurize the system easily either and use soapy water.
I sure hope it is just that vent.

If you have a source of smoke to force into the lines you can find the leak easily. Smoke will come out small cracks. I use a halloween smoke maker but maybe hardware stores have smoke in cans for this purpose.
