heater fan switch where?

Hi there, the blower to my heater stays on as soon as I plug in to an outside source, can't find a separate switch for it. Thought it should be on the small thermostat box, any suggestions would be appreciated...

Hi Capper

What year/model camper do you have?

And do you know the furnace make and model?

Do you have a 12 volt battery in your camper? The furnace is 12 volt and should run off the battery as well as plugging into 120VAC. By strange chance does it not run when the battery is on but does when plugged into shore power?

Hope this helps

John

I don't think it should run unless it's calling for heat and I don't know where you are but we sure don't need heat here in Maine right now. Disconnect one of the two wires to the thermostat and see if it still runs.

Hey John, thanks for the interest...it's an '86 14' Saturn, the heater is made by Hydro Flame. This is probably why I can't keep my batteries charged.

There should be a HEAT/OFF/COOL switch on the thermostat. Try setting that to OFF.

When set to HEAT the furnaces in our RV's want to run the fan right away to purge themselves of any fumes in the chambers. The fan runs until the heat kicks on and brings the inside temp up to whatever the t-stat is set for.

If the switch on the thermostat is set to OFF and the fan persists in running, there may be a bad sail switch inside the furnace or a short somewhere in the system.

You could also pull the fuse for the furnace - that should silence it for now.

Hi Capper

OK even the older Hydroflames work like the newer ones but have slightly different controls to accomplish the same run sequence. I think your fighting 2 problems.

1. The thermostat on the wall or where ever it is located has some issues assuming you have it turned to off and or the heat way down. The way these things are made to sequence there are only 2 wires in the T stat. A hot incoming power wire and the other wire that goes to the control board.

When the T stat calls for heat it sends the power to the one wire heading to the control system to run. The fan blows first. That is problem 1. Make sure the switch is off and if it still runs, the temp is turned all the way down, and if it still runs the the T stat is messed up OR the control cool down purge is stuck on. If it is as hot in CA as it is in OH right now you should not have a call for heat.... You can unhook the one wire that goes to the control board and it should stop running. If not, report back that means a separate problem.

2. Assuming this is a simple as the T stat is where the issue is, then you have an actual furnace problem. If the LP gas is on and the T stat sends a run signal, heat should come after the fan purge cycle is over. You where not complaining you had heat, only fan. Unless you have something really special there is no feature on the Hydroflames to run the fan and not get heat after the purge time.

If the T stat is unhooked and the fan still runs, then it points to the control relay on the older model is stuck on allowing the fan to run. But even then you should get heat or it is stuck in a cool down purge cycle.

Check it out and report back.

Hope this helps

John

Oh and yes the fan will drain the battery if left on battery only for a long time. The furnace fan running is the highest constant DC load in the camper

An '86, even if it has A/C, won't have it ducted and through the thermostat. It will be just a furnace-only t-stat.

Well, I unhooked the red wire from the Tstat, fan stayed on. I noticed as I plugged and unplugged it would take longer to come back on. I found a bundle of 3 wires in the furnace, one being the small red wire from the stat I think, unhooked that one and the fan has stopped. Furnace still lites, but won't need it for awhile. Thanks so much for the help guys...happy trails.
