Hairline crack on siding above rear door?

We have a T2553 with a rear door by the bedroom. Above the door there is a small hairline crack in the siding? Besides taking the siding off, has anyone else had this problem?

It is a 2006 T2553, we love it but this is disappointing. Thinking of just putting flexable (something) caulk will do the job.

thanks for your help,
Jim

for a hairline crack i would go to home depot and get the dynaflex clear siding caulk. if the crack continues to get longer i would drill the end of it out with a small bit then fill with jb weld or the like and reseal with a white caulk. just my opinion

My T1700 did the same thing seem to have been that way for awhile no issues but some one had used silicon on it I just cleaned it up and put a 6" piece of aluminum tape over it. Just a thin crack only thing I could figure they never put any thing above the door frame and closing the door over the years cracked it.

Does it look like this one on the rear bedroom door of my 2363? I understand it is not all that unusual for a crack to happen there.

The first picture, I drilled a 1/8 inch hole to stop the spread. The second picture I filled it with Liquid Nails that I had on hand. Long after the fact, I think JB Weld for aluminum would have been a better choice. The repair is visible but reminds me to look at it frequently.

After I filled the hole and crack.

Hi Jim,

The hairline crack you are describing has been seen before. We even have members who have posted pics of it.

This is "one" of the believed reasons they show up. Many have started running from a screw hole used to hold the door frame into the camper.

Those really rough sheet metal screwed holes that go through the siding set up the perfect storm for a crack. As the camper tows down the road the entire camper flexes. That flexing working on the metal where those corner screws are starts a small tear. Then over time it can grow slow or real quick pending the amount of flex.

To correct it or patch is a better term, is to drill a stop drill the hole at the end of the crack. This is a small hole, about 1/16" to maybe 1/8"dia. if the crack has opened up much at the end of the crack. The key is to make sure you drill it at the end and not before the end. If you drill it before the end, well it just keeps running.

Then if you have some Dicor "non leveling" roof sealant you caulk over it. The Dicor is better if you have it. It flexes with the camper, sticks to aluminum no problem, is white like the siding and will not flake off, can take the washing of the camper and heats and shrinks with the weather.

Avoid silicone if you can, it just does not hold up well long term.

If you see it now, it is better to stop drill it sooner then later as it may keep on running pending how much flex is occurring.

Hope this helps

John

I had the same crack on my '06 T-2499. After drilling the hole to keep it from spreading, I caulked it to keep water out.

I then purchased an aluminum door drip cap that once in place totally hid the crack.

Vintage Trailer Drip Cap

I don't recall where I got mine from, but you should be able to search for one that would work for you if the one in the link is not right.

The one on mine ran from the top of the door to the roof edge maybe 6" just as if it was cut with a sharp knife.

Our 2000 T1950 has 2 tears like that above the front door, thanks for the info of how it happens. We figured it had a great story to tell.

The crack in mine has no apparent reason my only guess is where two pieces of the paneling join and it's just pulling there. I opened it a bit with a putty knife and filled it with butyl calk pressed it down tight and put aluminum tape over it. After a while the flexing broke the tape but the butyl calk was still fine. In my case the awning covers it even rolled up so I just stopped worrying about it!
