Getting the counter out

I have a 1991 T-1700 I bought last year.
I noticed some water dripping from the floor at the aft LH side last year.
I found that the water tank, when full, is weeping at the filler hose to tank attachment area.
Access is pretty much non-existent - it looks like you have to remove the kitchen cabinet to get at the tank for further troubleshooting & repair.
I have looked over the cabinet inside and outside pretty carefully, but can't figure out how to detach and remove it, or at least remove the front face ot it.
Can anyone offer any info and/or the benefit of their experience on this?
Thanks

Hi Skik

First Welcome to Sunline Club!

I do not know your camper per say to help with the counter but have rustled with a weeping water fill hose to a fresh tank. They can be a real bugger some times to stop the weep.

First I’m making an assumption you are referring to the large 1 ½” fill hose. The newer ones are ribbed sort of on the outside. Mine are green with white strips on the ribs. The color I do not know if it is standard or not, but I’m trying to make sure we are talking about the right hose.

If that is the hose you mean is weeping, if you are lucky, you can tighten up the hose clamp or add a 2nd one behind it. I used the all stainless steel worm drive hose clamps.

Sunline in 2004 at least, used food grade silicon on the ID of the hose to help in sealing it up to the tank connection. The silicone has to be food grade so it will not leach out unwanted things into the water. We do use industrial food grade silicone at work but you may not be able to find it easily in the same format.

However you can find this. This is what I picked up and have in the camper if I ever need it. I have used this before on my weeping fill hose.

It is Aquarium grade. Bascially the regulations on fish are the same for humans in this regard. If you look on the back of the package it refers to a CFR no. (Code of Federal Regulations) that the FDA puts out in regards to complying with potable water regulations. Now how in the world did I find that out… well I did not trust what I was buying in Home Depot to be food grade like we do in the industrial food plants. But I trust DAP corp. when they printed that regulation in the fine print on the back of the package and then I looked it up the CFR number. Here is the trail to the FDA web site. http://www.fda.gov/ to search on

Finding these things on the FDA site can be a challenge if you have never been on that site before and even then I have a hard time finding things. We use to use hard print books, now it is all on the site. If you want I’ll dig it up and link you to it.

What ever you do, do NOT use any silicone that does not have that food contact rating printed in literature on the package. The pure silicone used for bath tubs etc is not food grade.

And one heads up. The silicone makes it super slippery. If you put it on too thick, when you tighten up the hose clamps the hose squirts off at you. Ideally they use a different hose that is true smooth of fully filling in on teh side walls on the inside and not full of small gentle grooves from the round outer ribs of plastic. The fresh tank is made from plastic that not much sticks to it, including silicone. If the fill hose was true and smooth on the ID, then I think that it being dry and sliding over the tank connection would seal better. I got so frustrated that if the weep did not stop, the next step was to take the hose out and change it. Mine thank goodness weeped out on the ground not inside the camper and I finally got it to stop.

Hope this helps and good luck

John

Getting the counter out

Thanks for the info, John
We are talking about the same thing.
I think someone previously replaced the filler & vent hoses as they are not per the Atwood tank manual on this website, and are on the short side length wise (there is no slack to allow you to pull back the fill port/door assembly a couple of inches for servicng/maintenance access.) I also have noted the vent hose is missing a clamp.
The filler hose is a heavy hose with external spiral ribbing. On re-assessing things after reading your comments, and comparing it against the Atwood parts diagram, probably the spiral ribbing is preventling the hose from sealing 100% when clamped.
I think I'll take a try at getting a hose like the one in the Atwood manual from a RV dealer, and installing it per your suggestion, as weill as installing the correct length of vent hose and both clamps. (There's enough access to do that easily enough.)
Thanks for the help!
