Dometic Fridge Smells of STRONG Ammonia

When I turn on my fridge it smells really terrible with a strong ammonia odor. Any thoughts? I have a 1991 travel trailer. If i need to replace it would you just suggest a mini fridge the same size as a replacement and just cap off the gas line?

That sounds like a failed cooling coil that leaked all the gas out. Do not run it in that condition as it can overheat and create a fire hazard

If you take the vent cover off outside for the fridge, look for yellow residue by the gas burner. That is a sign the coolent leaked out.

A new cooling unit can run around $800. A reconditioned one about half the cost. Plus the labor to install if you hire out the install. Several members have changed themselves.

We camp off grid and need the gas fridge. To us that is important and we would fix it or replace with a new gas fridge. Other club members have replaced their fridge with a dorm 120 bolt AC fridge as they always camp with power and do not want to spend the amount of money to repair the gas fridge.

The choice comes down to your preference and the way you camp.

Hope this helps

John

Repairing/replacing the gas one is the way to go and helps a lot with resale value. It also give you freedom to go any where many state parks for instance do not have power points.
