Do I need a water regulator?

2 water regulators were in my camper when I purchased it. Do I need to use one? If so, where do I put it on?

thanks

Noralee, yes you should....at least when hooked up to city water! Our's screws on between the inlet on the TT and the white hose.....you then attach the other end to the water faucet.

Need, no, but yes, it's a good idea.

Not gonna lie though, I've never used one in almost 20 years and never had any water leaks. But if I were traveling around a lot, I'd strongly consider it. My point is, if you forget to put it on one time, don't worry too much unless you notice the pressure seems high.

If I forget to put the regulator inline, I noticed that the pressure relief valve on the hot water heater would open up.

Hi Phillong,

Maybe this can help. If this actually happens, you either have extremely high water pressure, the air pocket in the HW heater has collapsed or your pressure relief is getting very weak.

The saftey relief trips for both temperature and pressure. The pressure is rated at 150 psi or 210 deg F on many of these.

I would think your air pocket in the top of the heater may have dissolved leaving no room for thermal expansion. The higher but still maybe OK water pressure even more aggravated the lack of the air pocket. If you drain the heater down in water and refill it while burping the relief valve to let air back in, the air pocket will reform. Maybe try this next time the heater is cold and no pressure in it when you plug into city water.

Hope this helps

John

I bought a short length of white hose and leave the pressure regulartor connecting the two hoses together. That way, I never forget and it seems to place alot less stress on my city water connection. It may just be the cheap (?) camco pressure regulator I bought at walmart but that thing's kinda heavy and I can see the connection bending a little if I hook it right up to the trailer.

Is there a reason to not screw it on the city water tap and the potable water hose to it? Seems like that would keep the bending/weight problem at bay - protecting the hose, too.

I also leave my pressure regulator attached to my white hose with the ends hooked together in storage. However, I've always attached the regulator to the source (i.e. the campground spigot vs. the trailer). I guess I've always figured it protects the hose also.

Nope, putting it on the spigot would be best. At one campground we go to, I often have trouble getting our regulator threaded to the spigot for some reason. The hose goes on just fine. I also have a 90 deg addapter that for some reason just would not thread on our previous camper's inlet. I haven't tried it on the new sunline yet.

Thanks John, I thought I read that in the forums once before, but did not remember it, until now anyway. Old age I guess.

It will have to wait until spring now, to give it a try.

You don't need a pressure regualator until you really need one. Some city water systems can have really high water pressures At the house our water pressure runs as high as 125 PSI which makes for nice showers but can damage your plumbing unless you have a house pressure regulator.

I always keep a inline regualtor on our white hose.

Rural camp grounds usually are not a problem but city supplied system can be they are cheap even if you use them when you don't need to it won't effect any thing.

WOW.... Not good. Those kind of high pressure excursions can aggravate an older home hot water heater leak quick....

Thats how we discovered the problem the presure valve would open in the middle of the night and wake us up, the house water regulator had failed. The pumber that came out told me is a fairly frequent failure in older houses and stresses the entire water system
