De-winterizing - Check LP Hoses !!

Damn them fuzzy tailed, grey haired rats!!! AKA Grey Squirrels....

While checking out trailer from the long winters nap, we had a gas leak. Upon fruther investigation found that the hose from the regulator to the trailer's piping had been chewed on in several places One of which was the cause of the leak.

Lo and behold my local RV shop tells me they see 10 - 20 of these every year. Evidently the fuzzy tailed rats have a taste for the rubber in the hoses.

Anyhow, on the advice of the RV shop, and several others I've talked to, the new hose is wrapped in metal tape and covered with a split corragated plastic wire protector.

So, take the time to check your hoses for nibbles, in addition to normal wear and tear.

While everyone is checking the main hose from the regulator to the trailer's steel piping, also check the pigtails that go from the tanks to the regulator.

I had one that started to leak at the end of last season, so I am planning on replacing both of them. The hose itself was starting to get brittle but the leak was right where the hose connects to the tank end connector.

I guess 9 seasons isn't too bad for an item like that.

The hoses going from the regulator to the tanks tend to go first because they bend on a tight angle to hook up to the tank. The rubber always cracks in the bend.
