Correcting side strip discoloration

I have another thread where I am doing a nice clean-up and facelift on my 2002 Sunline Lite T1950. One oddity I have discovered, is the long strip that runs up and down the side of the RV. The color stripes are obviously tape, no issues there. Just above the color tape strips, and below the next panel, there is an area that has a difference surface texture than the panel above and below. I can easily clean the black streaks on the panel above and below the stripes. The color stripes are okay enough. But this area that I have circled in the picture appears to have become discolored at some point and it does not come off with the cleaners that seem to work on the rest of the trailer. Maybe someone used a bad black stripe cleaner. It does not look like there was a color tape stripe. But the surface is different than the others. My temptation is just to paint it or add a 1.5" tape that matches my Tahoe.

Any info on if this area is cleanable or what could have caused a discoloration in this one spot (both sides of the RV) and not the others?

Thank you!

It's just dirt, but very stubborn dirt. It isn't anything unusual, it's just a sign of previous owners not cleaning often. Unfortunately with a trailer living outside, it will get dirty again like that, and it's hard to keep clean. To make matters worse, the paint is thin, and you can rub through it pretty easy.

The best way I've found to clean it is with a Mr. Clean eraser and Awesome cleaner, but you'll have to scrub hard until you see white paint again. If you start to see shiny metal, don't rub that area anymore. Also, keep a hose handy- rinse the area as soon as you clean it. If the Awesome/dirt residue dries on, which happens quickly, it'll leave streaks or dirt spots that are hard to clean off.

You can try waxing the white part when you're done, to help prevent it from looking bad again so quickly. I know the owners manual will tell you not to wax the siding, but this one piece of metal doesn't have Krystal Kote for stripe adhesion, so that recommendation doesn't apply.

Yes, what SunlineFan said.

To wash the whole camper, I use it diluted in a bucket and a long pole brush. Wet the camper, gentle brush scrub, do in small enough areas to "not" dry. Like 3 or 4 feet wide of the camper then rinse. If it dries, then the black stain will bond back on again. So you have to clean again...

On tougher staining, I wet the wall, spray on full strength, use the Magic Eraser like Sunline fan said and then hose off quick before it starts to set up. Do not leave it on full strength and or let is dry on, with or without pre wetting or after using it. It needs to be well rinsed after you scrub it clean. Do small areas.

While we call this "Awesome" all the time, the real name is "LA's Totally Awesome". A web hit on those words will find the right product. Here is the mfg site Awesome All Purpose Concentrated Cleaner (32oz) | LA's Totally Awesome

They sell LA's Totally Awesome in Dollar General and some Family Dollar stores. It usually runs $1.00 a quart. There are other places that sell it too.

If you do a hit on "Awesome Cleaner" that can bring up some other products that are citrus based made by The R.F. Thompson Co. and not what we are talking about. This other company came on the scene a while ago and folks where finding the wrong product.

Hope this helps.

John

How about using a fine polishing compound and then waxing? I think I have some, somewhere.

That’s what I would do and did on mine. The Awesome cleaner will remove the paint if using the elbow grease required. Doesn’t affect the coated siding though.

It might work, but depending on the spot, it might not be aggressive enough. Always test it in a corner or hidden area first though.

Let us know how this comes out. I have not yet found a good way to bring back the dull blue strip.
