Coach battery questions

I am thinking about swapping my one old Group 24 12-volt battery for either a new Group 27 12-volt battery OR a pair of 6-volt T-105's for more AMP/HOURS.

I figure the single 12-volt will cost me less $$, but I am still leaning towards the two golf cart 6-volts.

I have measured and I should be able to easily fit either choice up on the tongue. I know the extra 6-volt battery will add about 60 pounds to the tongue weight.

I am comfortable with the idea of wiring up the 6-volt batteries in series and I believe I can figure out what needs to be connected to what up front on our 2499.

Can I still use my 12-volt 3-stage automatic charger on the 6-volt array once it's hooked up in series? It's only a 6-amp unit. And can I buy and use one of those Battery Tender PLUS units on the 6-volt array to control sulfation or will I need to get a 6-volt model and maintain them as stand alone batteries?

105's

We've had two 105's for the last 12 years and they're still going strong. We use the motorhome's converter (power dynamics) with a charge wizard that regularly cycles the voltage to 14 volts.

Considering their longevity, they have been a bargin. As you may know we travel about 7 months of the year.

Hi Dave

See if this helps. 2, 6 volts batteries wired in series to produce a working 12 volts is a good move. When my current Group 27’s die, I will upgrade to 6 volt golf cart type.

To the battery charger or your on board American convertor, those 2 6 volt’ers are like a large capacity 12 volt battery. So yes charge them in the 12 volt fashion with the 2 wired in series.

Plus end of charger still on positive end of one battery post, then your series cable between the 2 batteries (- to +) and out the other end on the negative post. This is not a problem. The charger or convertor have no idea they are 2, 6 volt in series. All it sees is qty 6, 2 volts cells adding up to a 12 volt potential. Remember an actual 12 volt battery is made up of 6, 2 volt cells linked under the plastic cover from internal cell post to internal cell post to give a 12 volt potential across the out side posts.

And yes by all means, use a 12 volt Battery Minder Plus to desulfate them and keep them topped off all the time. Again hook up in the same 12 volt fashion.

You said Battery Tender PLUS, did you mean the brand Battery Minder Plus?

I have not found that the Battery Tender PLUS http://batterytender.com/product_info.php?products_id=2 actually has a desulfate mode.

But the Battery Minder PLUS does.

By the why you can get the Battery Minder Plus for like the low $40’s

Hope this helps

John

As JohnB has said, once the two 6v batteries are hooked in series the converter will see them as a 12v unit. Also as long as you connect them in series to a battery charger, they will also be seen as a single 12v unit. I did this mod a couple of months ago and have been very happy with it. Now one thing to keep in mind, depending on the brand of 6v batteries you have, they may be taller than your existing Group 24 battery boxes. I purchased US2200XC 6v batteries and they were just slightly taller than my battery boxes. Here is the link to pictures of my installation and my battery box solution to the taller 6v batteries.

This is good. Many thanx for the info, guys.

I suspected that my existing 3-stage charger would work. Since it's a 6-amp charger, it may take awhile to re-charge everything, but it will work. Slow is OK for now.

Yes John... I did mean the Battery Minder Plus. I have a Battery Tender hooked up to my motorcycle and I guess my brain just went there.

I GOOGLED the Battery Minder Plus and found several vendors online with prices around $42. Looks like I gotta get me one!
