Camper Roof Snow Loading

I am concerned about the snow loading of a camper roof . I live in New Hampshire where my camper is also located . I am able to remove the snow from the roof after each storm . But now I wonder what others do when they close up their camper for the winter and head to warmed climates . If stored in a camp ground , do they provide a service to remove snow ? Is snow loading an issue at all ? Here in the frozen north , and I am sure , in many other states it would be an issue you must deal with . I would hate to return in the spring to find my camper roof caved in . Interestingly , I have not heard or read much on this topic . Thanks Rich

There is a lot of snow up here we have 4-5' over here in the mountains.! I don't know I see a lot of campers parked all winter with the roofs covered with snow that's a good question. The span is not all that great not like a garage or house roof.

Hi Rich,
We need to meet sometime. Can you make it to the M&G this year? Quichee Vt, second annual.
I solved the problem when I left NH last Monday by taking my Sunline with me. Its 60ish in Fl where we are, but no snow on the roof. Actually, didn't lose the snow until about mid state South Carolina.
Sorry, not the answer you were looking forward.
John

Hi John

I will check out the meet and greet you mentioned . Thanks for the advice on the roof snow loads , think I'll just tow it in a southerly direction until the snow melts then turn around , problem solved

I'm slightly east of Conway NH in Maine my camper has no snow on it! Well it is parked in the barn so I guess that helps.

Hi Rich,
I built a barn (with help), back in 2006 when I bought my Que new. The best thing I ever done. You can see all the photos of the build etc.it in my albums. on my home page.

I guess it's really about the square feet there is just so much weight you can get on a small roof even with 3' of snow.

I'm more concerned with the melting process having the snow piled up around the roof vents. What're the chances of melt backing up and flowing over the lips of the vents? Even tightly closed they weren't designed to be as tight as a ship's hatch, were they?

While we don't have the amount of snow this year that you have up North, what we do have here in central PA are a lot of people who leave their campers out in the elements all year long. Right now most of them have about 1' of compressed frozen snow on their roofs and we haven't seen any roof cave-ins. No one ever mentions having water damage either. Apparently people here figure their campers will remain watertight… or just don't realize what may be going on behind their walls.

I am close to Wannabes area.... and I sweat thru the snow cover every year... mine is outside, but has a camper cover, which does seem to help. I do check on it to make sure nothing looks "weird" several times a winter and if we have that much snow, out comes the ladder and the broom to get it off -- the ice build up from freezing rain/sleet and refrozen melt worries me much more than the snow.

I had a MH and it was out all winter I had a cover and I made short saw horses to put under the cover it gave the cover a bit of a pitch and allowed me to leave the vents open to help with moisture inside.

We just keep getting snow and more snow. Now wet snow and some rain. I'm concerned that the loads are getting heavy and fast. Before, yes a couple of feet of snow on my roof, however, it was a light fluffy (in reason) and frozen thus not as much of a problem. Temps. have stayed below freezing as well, thus very little compaction or settling.

The roof may not have much span, but it doesn't have much in the way of rafter depth either. Couple that with the cardboard like material for the roof deck..... well need I say any more.

My concern is for the 1996 T-2053 with the rubber roof. The 1983 T-1550 doesn't concern nearly as much.

I have mine outdoors here in freakin' Vermont, the snow capital of the east, with maybe a couple feet on it last week until I cleaned it off. Last fall I placed a few 2x4s on the roof along with a huge tarp. So far, so good.
I am also now wondering about those who leave theirs in campgrounds here in VT, NH and ME.

Very Cold & Snow covered winter in NY

For over 2 1/2 months the snow here never got lower than 18" to 26". Other winters we would get 1 to 2 ft. snow and it would be mostly gone in a few weeks. Took this snow covered photo today, (but it would have looked about the same if I took it any time in the last 2 1/2 Mos.) We will get another 4" this afternoon, then down to around 4degs. tonight.
Well at least the Trailer is Dry.

Hey, we just got back from FL. No camper involved though. Ugly airlines, UGH !! Retirement trip (for Tom) to the Keys. Super nice weather and a nice break from this awful Winter ! Have a great time and we look forward to seeing you this summer ! We may try out that Federal campground you spoke of before the Quechee one as it sounded really nice. Maybe late June or early July. Let us know if you're in the area !

I asked the owner of a local camp ground about the seasonal campers including his own all of them are pretty much long hike on snow shoes and he said no one clears them off. The camping World 12 miles from here has a lot full of new and used ones with a winter's worth of snow on them. I read some where they are supposed to withstand 100# per square foot of load that would be a lot of snow.
