Calgon AND Happy Camper ?

I guess many here know our fresh water tank was not cared for properly and we ended up taking it down to clean it out. Well, apparently the black water tank was not used properly and, after all this time, we are still cleaning out _____ we inherited from the former owner. I'll skip the details. Happy Camper (reg. not extreme) has been in use and now we hear Calgon is good, working in a different way than the Happy Camper. I found liquid Calgon locally and want to use it. Can I use both at once? Is there any reason not to? We do NOT want to have to take the black tank off the trailer to clean it out !!!!

hmmmm.... I thought someone would have had an opinion on this. I have used Calgon water softner but haven't tried Happy Camper yet. The Calgon water softner, as I understand it, just keeps "stuff" from sticking to the walls of the tank so it seems it would work ok with the Happy Camper to keep things cleaner.

I had a similar problem when I bought my 2363. It was only used one season while the owners built a new house. They never towed it or "camped" with it. I think they had no idea how to manage the black tank and I got lots of ... residue ... that kept draining every time I put water in it. I got one of those wands to go on the end of a hose that had 4 holes around the end. I stuck that down the toilet hole and washed out the black tank. Took a lot of washing to get clear water out the drain. (I have a short clear section I hook to my dump connection so I can see when it is done draining.)

Deb,

I do not use Calgon, but I do use Arm and Hammer Washing Soda to soften the water. In my case it is partly due to my really flat tanks which are part of the extended season package. The washing soda softens the water and it for sure makes the waste come out easier.

I use it with Happy Camper and have not had an issue. I also have used it with Sea Zyme, (bacteria and enzymes) similar to Happy Camper. I have the poweder and I do have to mix it up in a little plastic jug with a lid, shake well with water, warm work better and then pour down the toilet. With the powder if I do not premix, it gets hard and crusty in a glob.

As Gene said, the soft water makes things slide out easier. I do not know if it will do much for bio breakdown action if you have built up "stuff". The extreme clean may dod a better job of that.

Since I clean my tanks well after every trip, and have internal sprayers in both black and gray, I have not had any build up. I am fortunate that days when the dump line is long, I dump and run... to not hold up others in the line. Then once home and unpacking I can put the sewer hose into my aerator tank septic system and finish cleaning up with the sprayers. I also at the end of every campout, transfer all the left over fresh water into the black thank so it is usually always full of liquid before I dump. I have never tried it any other way, but dumping a 1/4 full tank with not much water inside I'm sure will leave a lot of paper and solids behind.

My T2499 had a large slope towards the drain fitting and it drained out well, but this T310 with the flat enclosed tank not so easy.

Hope this helps and good luck

John

Thank you both. We did get one of those wands you stick down the toilet and used it. That is when we realized all was not so clean in the tank. We do have the clear section on the hose as well. We will keep at it and perhaps buy the Extreme cleaner if we don't feel we're getting the job done.

I bought mine online - https://www.5starhappycamper.com/order.html

Some people said it used to be found at some RV shows, but almost anyone I know has had to order it. The above company is great. It is not cheap, but it is a good product and a tub lasts a long time.
