Burnt Wire in Power Distribution Panel

This past weekend when I was swapping out my 30A power cable and wiring in a dedicated circuit for the converter I installed a couple of weeks ago I saw something that didn't look right. I found a burnt neutral wire in the power center. Here is a picture of the part of the wire I removed:

This piece of wire was off of the A/C neutral wire. I found that the screw had backed out so much on the terminal block that this wire was loose and could be remove without having to loosen the terminal block screw. I am figuring due to the connection being so loose, it was arcing inside the panel when the A/C was runing. After find this and removing the burnt section of wire I checked all of the other terminal screws on the neutral and ground terminal block as well as all the hot connections on all of the circuit breakers. I found several screw were loose but none as loose as the A/C neutral wire was.

Since these units are constantly traveling down the road and boucning and shaking as they are towed, I am guessing this is what caused these connections to become loose. I have now added checking the connections inside the power distribution panel to ensure they are tight to my annual check list.

Good find loose connection will really over heat wiring no matter what the voltage.

Bill, yes good find as that is a fire hazard. I have not yet found the burnt wire but have found terminals looser then they should be. It is one of those annual checks for sure.

I found 2 on the breakers themselves loose so add them to the list as well.

When vendors ship a machine to us at work, during installation every screw in the electrical panels get touched/tightened by the installation electrician. There are hundreds of terminals in these cabinets so the odds are higher for loose connections. We stipulate air ride semi trailers when shipping just for this reason to reduce the road vibration from shaking the machine loose.

While TT’s or 5’ers do not have hundreds of terminals, the suspension on the average camper is not very good for reducing road vibration.

Again good find and thanks for sharing. Pictures of the real world find brings this into perspective quick.
