Broken Screen Door Latch

While camping over the Memorial Day weekend, the spring inside our screen door latch fell out and the door will not stay attached to the outer door when you open and close it. It will also not stay closed unless you take the time to push the latch up in the closed position. It's not a huge deal but can be annoying... Does anyone have any inexpensive sources for a replacement screen door latch or a quick fix for the spring?

Trailblazer is an unknown quantity at this point
We broke the spring in the door latch while on a camping trip a few years ago. As a temporary fix I first took apart the door latch to find the small spring that was broken. I next took apart a ball point pen and removed the spring from it. I cut the spring down so I only had the two end coils which are close together and one extra coil. I re bent the third coil to act as a hook which is the anchor for the spring. I then put everything back together and it worked great. You have to do some fiddling with the spring and the anchor piece until they are in the right shape and position, but it will work.

The next time we were at an RV dealer I bought a replacement handle but never installed it as my temporary repair worked so well. Now this was like working on an old Meccano set and it is very tedious work. Unfortunately I did not take and photos of this repair but once you take the handle apart you will see the broken spring and it should make sense. Just be careful as you take the handle apart so the broken spring doesn't fall out.

Hope this helps and good luck.

Well, I took the latch apart last night and found that the spring was just broken so I was able to bend a new "tail" on it with some pliers. It took a little adjustment but I was able to get it back together and it seems to work good as new. But, I may buy a spare to throw in the cabinet in case it happens again... Thanks for the info!
